CSKA Moscow Tops Salavat Yulaev Behind Gamzin’s 25 Saves

MOSCOW (Interstat) — CSKA Moscow defeated visiting Salavat Yulaev Ufa 3-1 on Monday in a Kontinental Hockey League game at CSKA Ice Palace. Dmitry Gamzin stopped 25 of 26 shots to earn the win, and CSKA improved to 10-3. Salavat Yulaev fell to 6-6. The announced attendance was 9,058.

Salavat Yulaev opened the game with an early penalty when Grigory Panin was called for interference in the first period. Neither team scored in the opening period despite chances at both ends. CSKA broke the deadlock in the second period when Prokhor Poltapov scored his fifth goal of the season, with Marat Khairullin picking up his fifth assist. Salavat Yulaev answered later in the second when Devin Brosseau scored his fifth goal, with help from Alexander Alexeyev and Semyon Vyazovoi. That goal came after CSKA’s Maxim Mamin was sent off for high sticking, and it tied the game.

CSKA regained the lead in the third period when Nikolai Kovalenko scored his fourth goal, assisted by Jeremy Roy. Salavat Yulaev’s Danil Alalykin was called for delaying the game at the same time. Maxim Sorkin then added his fifth goal for CSKA to make it 3-1. Klim Kostin was also cited for throwing the stick earlier in the second period. Gamzin finished with 25 saves on 26 shots, including work in the final period as Salavat Yulaev pressed for another goal.

Sorkin recorded a goal and two shots. Kovalenko had a goal and one shot. Poltapov also scored and put one shot on net. Khairullin contributed an assist and four shots. Roy had an assist and one shot. Pavel Karnaukhov registered two shots and two hits, while Dmitry Samorukov had two shots and one hit. Denis Guryanov finished with three shots and four hits. Robert Hamilton was held without a point.

The first period’s only penalty came at 12:14 elapsed when Panin went off for interference. Poltapov opened the scoring at 27:54, and Mamin’s high-sticking penalty at 31:58 preceded Brosseau’s equalizer at 32:30. Kostin was cited for throwing the stick at 37:13. Kovalenko put CSKA ahead at 48:17, and Alalykin’s delay-of-game penalty came at the same time. Sorkin completed the scoring at 51:22.

CSKA entered the game on a seven-game winning streak, including a shootout victory against Dynamo Moscow in its previous outing and a road win at Dinamo Minsk. Salavat Yulaev had lost two straight, falling to Sibir Novosibirsk at home and at HC Sochi. The visitors were seeking to avoid a third consecutive defeat and started with energy, but the penalty to Panin disrupted their early rhythm.

Gamzin had also stopped 25 of 26 shots in a win at Dinamo Minsk and made nine saves on nine shots in a win at Lada Togliatti earlier in the season. His steady play helped CSKA withstand Salavat Yulaev’s push after Brosseau tied the game. CSKA’s defense limited second-chance opportunities, and the home side capitalized on its chances in the third period.

CSKA received contributions throughout the lineup. Karnaukhov and Samorukov added physical play on the forecheck and blue line. Guryanov was active with three shots and four hits. Hamilton did not appear on the scoresheet but was part of a defensive group that held Salavat Yulaev to one goal. Gamzin’s 25 saves were the backbone of the effort.

CSKA’s pressure in the middle and late periods forced Salavat Yulaev to chase the game. The home team blocked shots and cleared rebounds, while Gamzin handled the rest. The victory continued CSKA’s strong start to the season and handed Salavat Yulaev another road setback. The visitors could not convert enough of their chances after tying the game in the second period.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of CSKA 3, Salavat Yulaev 1. Interstat’s ELO system gave CSKA a 54.6 percent probability to win.
