Shugayev, Torpedo blank Sochi in KHL home victory

NIZHNY NOVGOROD (Interstat) — Dmitry Shugayev stopped all 19 shots he faced and Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod defeated HC Sochi 3-0 in a Kontinental Hockey League game Thursday afternoon at Trade Union Sport Palace. The shutout lifted Torpedo to 6-2-0 this season, while Sochi dropped to 1-6-0. An announced crowd of 12,350 watched the home side control the final two periods and hand the visitors their sixth loss in seven games. Torpedo has now won two of its last three. The visitors were shut out for the third time this season.

Viktor S. Fyodorov opened the scoring at 29:11 of the second period, converting with assists from Pavel Kraskovsky and Bogdan Konyushkov. The goal broke a scoreless stretch that included several penalties but no scoring chances that changed the game. Torpedo doubled its lead early in the third when Yegor Vinogradov scored at 50:01, with Anton Sizov and Daniil Seroukh picking up assists. Sergei Goncharuk made it 3-0 at 54:21, finishing a sequence set up by Michael Vecchione and Kraskovsky. Sochi could not answer, and Shugayev remained steady as the visitors pressed for a breakthrough that never arrived.

Shugayev was the game’s top star, earning the win with 19 saves on 19 shots. The performance followed a 21-save outing in a 7-2 win at Lada Togliatti on Sept. 11. Fyodorov finished with one goal, four shots and two hits. Kraskovsky recorded two assists and one hit. Goncharuk had one goal, five shots and two hits. Vinogradov added one goal, three shots and two hits. Konyushkov contributed an assist and two shots. Sizov had an assist, one shot and one hit. Seroukh chipped in an assist and one shot. Belevich recorded two shots and one hit. Tkachyov registered two shots.

Penalties shaped the tempo at times. Torpedo’s Amir Garayev was called for tripping at 3:10 of the first period, and Sochi’s Ivan Yezhov went off for holding at 6:16. Torpedo’s Andrei Belevich received a too-many-men penalty at 11:12. In the second period, Nikita Kamalov of Torpedo was whistled for hooking at 21:09, and Cameron Lee of Sochi was sent off for tripping at 21:48. Torpedo’s Michael Vecchione received a hooking penalty at 30:43, Belevich was assessed another too-many-men call at 37:19, and Sochi’s Pyotr Andreyanov was penalized for too many men at 39:09. In the third, Sochi’s Yaroslav Belyakov was called for holding at 52:48, and Viktor Baldayev was sent off for holding at 59:05. Despite the frequent special-teams situations, Torpedo’s defense kept Sochi from finding consistent rhythm.

Torpedo’s recent form has been strong. The club beat Avangard Omsk 5-1 on Sept. 22, lost to CSKA Moscow 3-2 on Sept. 18, and beat Ak Bars Kazan 3-2 on Sept. 14. Earlier in September, Torpedo won 7-2 at Lada Togliatti, lost 3-0 at CSKA Moscow, beat Dinamo Minsk 4-3 in a shootout, and won 1-0 at Spartak Moscow. Sochi, meanwhile, has struggled to generate offense. The club lost 5-1 to Sibir Novosibirsk on Sept. 20, beat Ak Bars Kazan 3-2 on Sept. 18, lost 4-0 to CSKA Moscow on Sept. 16, lost 1-0 to SKA Saint Petersburg on Sept. 12, lost 4-1 at Avangard Omsk on Sept. 10, and lost 5-1 at Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk on Sept. 8. Sochi will visit Severstal Cherepovets on Saturday before traveling to Shanghai Dragons on Sept. 28. Torpedo will host Salavat Yulaev Ufa on Monday.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Torpedo 4, Sochi 1. Its ELO system gave Torpedo a 77.4 percent probability to win before the opening faceoff. The actual result matched the projected winner, though Torpedo’s defense and Shugayev’s perfect afternoon kept Sochi off the scoreboard entirely.
