Avangard’s road trip has been difficult. The club lost at Traktor Chelyabinsk 2-1 on Sunday and at Lokomotiv Yaroslavl 2-1 on Friday. Before those defeats, Avangard had won three of four, including overtime victories over Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg and Metallurg Magnitogorsk and a 4-1 home win over HC Sochi. Torpedo, meanwhile, bounced back from a 3-2 home loss to CSKA Moscow on Friday. Torpedo had won three of its previous four before that defeat, including a 3-2 home win over Ak Bars Kazan and a 7-2 road rout of Lada Togliatti.
Torpedo will next host HC Sochi on Thursday. Avangard will continue its road swing at Spartak Moscow on Thursday. The loss dropped Avangard to 3-4, while Torpedo moved to 5-2. The game featured 11 penalties, including Leivo’s misconduct, and Avangard was assessed nine of them. Torpedo’s ability to score early in periods and convert after Avangard penalties proved decisive.
