SKA Saint Petersburg at CSKA Moscow
MOSCOW (Interstat) — Denis Guryanov recorded a hat trick and added an assist Tuesday afternoon to power CSKA Moscow to a series-clinching 6-2 victory over SKA Saint Petersburg in Game 4 of their Kontinental Hockey League playoff matchup at CSKA Ice Palace.
The win gave CSKA the series, three games to one, and sent the army club advancing to the next round of the Gagarin Cup playoffs. A crowd of 10,342 watched the home team dominate the final two periods to pull away.
Guryanov, a forward listed at 6-foot-2 and 183 pounds, was the driving force behind the CSKA attack, finishing with three goals on five shots. His linemate, Nikolai Kovalenko, also had a standout performance with a goal and three assists. The duo connected early to set the tone.
CSKA struck first at the 6:31 mark of the opening period when Guryanov netted his fourth of the playoffs, assisted by Kovalenko. The lead was short-lived, as SKA defenseman Andrei Pedan, a native of Kaunas, Lithuania, answered just over five minutes later with a blast from the point to tie the game at 1-1.
CSKA regained the lead before the first intermission. Defenseman Jeremy Roy scored his first of the postseason at 14:49, with Guryanov and Kovalenko picking up the helpers, making it 2-1.
The middle frame was tighter, with CSKA extending its lead on a goal from veteran forward Sergei Kalinin at 27:24. The 3-1 score held into the third period, where CSKA put the game out of reach with a three-goal outburst.
After killing off a penalty, CSKA capitalized on a power play of its own. Guryanov scored his second of the afternoon at 54:05, again from Kovalenko, to make it 4-1. SKA showed a brief spark when defenseman Brennan Menell scored at 56:35 to cut the deficit to 4-2.
Any hope of a comeback was extinguished just over a minute later. Kovalenko finished a play himself at 57:37 to restore the three-goal lead. Guryanov completed his hat trick into an empty net with 53 seconds remaining, sealing the 6-2 final.
In goal, CSKA’s Dmitry Gamzin earned the win with 31 saves on 33 shots. The victory improved CSKA’s overall season record to 40 wins, 31 losses and one tie. SKA’s season ends with a record of 31-31-2.
The result aligned with pregame projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a 3-2 CSKA victory and whose ELO rating system gave CSKA a 58.1 percent probability to win.
CSKA controlled the series after dropping Game 2 in St. Petersburg. The teams split the first two games in Moscow, with CSKA winning 3-2 and 4-2, before SKA took Game 2 at home 1-0. CSKA reclaimed command with a 4-2 road win in Game 3 before closing out the series on home ice Tuesday.
