CSKA Moscow at Spartak Moscow
MOSCOW (Interstat) — In a tense edition of the Moscow Derby that required a shootout to decide, CSKA Moscow edged Spartak Moscow 3-2 in a Kontinental Hockey League game Wednesday afternoon at Luzhniki Minor Arena.
The victory improved CSKA’s record across all competitions to 36 wins and 30 losses, while Spartak moved to 35 wins and 32 losses.
The game defied a pregame projection from Interstat’s ELO system, which had favored Spartak with a 52.90 percent probability to win. The final score, however, matched the simulator’s exact numerical prediction.
CSKA goaltender Dmitry Gamzin, listed at 6-foot-2 and 159 pounds, secured the win with 21 saves on 23 shots through regulation and overtime, before stopping all attempts in the shootout. His counterpart, Spartak’s Artyom Zagidulin, made 23 saves on 25 shots and was credited with the shootout loss.
The visiting Army Men opened the scoring late in the second period. At the 26:19 mark, Spartak forward Sergei Lukyantsev, who played a physically imposing game credited with five hits, netted his first goal of the season. Assists went to Alexander Pashin and Nikita Kholodilin.
CSKA responded quickly. Just under four minutes later, at 30:05 of the second, forward Maxim Sorkin scored his ninth of the season, converting passes from Prokhor Poltapov and Dmitry Buchelnikov to tie the game.
CSKA took its first lead early in the third period. Veteran forward Sergei Kalinin scored his third goal at 46:12, with Klim Kostin and Rhett Gardner providing the assists.
Spartak pushed back to force overtime. At 51:26 of the third, forward Mikhail Maltsev scored his 18th goal of the campaign, assisted by defenseman Andrei A. Mironov and forward Ivan Morozov, who finished with one helper.
The 2-2 stalemate held through the remainder of the third period and a five-minute overtime period, sending the rivalry clash to a shootout. The only penalty of the game was a minor infraction called against Spartak’s Daniil Gutik in the first period.
In the shootout, CSKA’s Nikolai Kovalenko scored the decisive goal in the fifth round, securing the extra point for his team.
The contest continued a trend of tightly contested matches between the crosstown rivals. CSKA has now won four of the last five meetings, including a 2-0 victory in their most recent matchup on Feb. 12. Two of this season’s prior derbies were also decided by a single goal.
CSKA, which had lost 3-2 at Sibir Novosibirsk in its previous game on Monday, will look to build on the win when it hosts Lada Togliatti on Friday. Spartak, coming off a 4-3 shootout loss to Dynamo Moscow on Monday, will also be at home Friday to face Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk.
