Avangard Omsk at Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg
YEKATERINBURG, Russia (Interstat) — Anatoly Golyshev scored twice and Daniel Sprong contributed a goal and an assist as Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg delivered a commanding 5-1 victory over the Kontinental Hockey League-leading Avangard Omsk on Tuesday night at KRK Uralets.
The win, fueled by a dominant second-period surge, avenged a pair of close overtime losses to Avangard earlier this season and provided a significant boost to Avtomobilist’s playoff positioning. The home team improved its record to 33 wins and 25 losses, while Avangard, despite the defeat, remains atop the overall standings with 39 wins and 19 losses.
The game began with Avangard weathering early pressure and killing off a penalty. However, Avtomobilist broke through at 9:08 of the opening period. Yegor Chernikov netted his fourth goal of the season, assisted by Kirill Vorobyov, to give the home side a 1-0 lead.
The match turned decisively in the second period. After killing a penalty, Avtomobilist extended its lead at the 31:41 mark. Golyshev scored his sixth of the campaign, converting a setup from Stephane Da Costa and Semyon Kizimov.
Avangard responded quickly, with defenseman Damir Sharipzyanov blasting his 23rd goal past goaltender Vladimir Galkin at 34:37 to cut the deficit to 2-1. The momentum was short-lived. Just 93 seconds later, Brooks Macek restored the two-goal cushion for Avtomobilist, finishing a play with assists from Nikita Tryamkin and Sprong.
The third period saw Avtomobilist put the game out of reach. On a power play resulting from a too-many-men penalty on Avangard, Sprong capitalized at 48:45, firing home his 23rd goal with helpers from Alexander Sharov and Macek. Golyshev then sealed the victory with his second of the night at 56:43, a power-play marker assisted by Kizimov and defenseman Sergei Zborovsky.
Galkin was stellar in net for Avtomobilist, securing the win with 30 saves on 31 shots. His performance stifled an Avangard offense that had entered the contest with the league’s best record.
The result defied pregame projections from Interstat, whose ELO system had given Avangard a 59.7 percent probability to win and whose simulator had predicted a narrow 4-3 Avtomobilist victory. The actual five-goal margin underscored a comprehensive team effort by the home side.
Avangard, which had defeated Avtomobilist 2-1 in overtime here just over a month ago on Jan. 22 and lost 3-2 in overtime at home on Feb. 5, saw its two-game winning streak snapped. The Hawks will look to rebound on Friday when they host Metallurg Magnitogorsk.
Avtomobilist, which had suffered a 5-2 loss to Admiral Vladivostok in its previous outing, regained its form in a statement victory. The team continues its homestand Friday against Ak Bars Kazan.
