Barys Astana at Sibir Novosibirsk
NOVOSIBIRSK, Russia (Interstat) — Semyon Koshelev scored the decisive shootout goal Friday night, lifting Sibir Novosibirsk to a 2-1 victory over Barys Astana in a Kontinental Hockey League match at Ice Sports Palace Sibir.
The game, which concluded a three-game season series sweep for the home side, unfolded precisely as projected by Interstat’s game simulator, which forecast a 2-1 Sibir win. The analytics firm also gave Sibir a 70.6 percent probability of victory, a prediction borne out in a tight, goaltender-dominated contest.
Barys, despite being outshot 51-22, secured a critical standings point thanks to a 50-save performance from goaltender Andrei Shutov. The Kazakh club’s record now stands at 20 wins and 46 losses. Sibir improved to 30 wins and 38 losses with the win.
The visitors struck first, capitalizing on an early power play. Just over three minutes into the first period, defenseman Reilly Walsh netted his 16th goal of the season, assisted by Michael Vecchione and Mason Morelli. The goal came during a minor penalty to Sibir’s Mikhail Abramov for slashing.
Sibir controlled large stretches of the game, relentlessly testing Shutov. The pressure finally told late in the second period. At the 23:32 mark, Semyon Koshelev netted his 13th of the season, converting a setup from Anton Kosolapov and Abramov, who atoned for his earlier penalty with the secondary assist.
That score held through a scoreless third period and overtime, despite Sibir defenseman Chase Evans Priskie firing a game-high 10 shots on goal and the home team holding a significant territorial advantage. Taylor Beck added seven shots for Sibir, while Andy Andreoff had four.
The shootout victory extends Sibir’s recent positive form at home, where they have now won three of their last four games, including notable victories over SKA Saint Petersburg and CSKA Moscow earlier in the week. For Barys, the single point does little to alter a difficult season trajectory. The team has now lost eight of its last nine games, with the lone victory in that stretch a 3-0 shutout of Amur Khabarovsk on March 10.
The result continues a recent trend in the head-to-head matchup, with Sibir having now won five consecutive games against Barys. Three of those five victories, including a 2-1 shootout win in Astana on Dec. 7, have been decided by a single goal or in a shootout.
Sibir will look to build on the win as they continue a homestand, while Barys continues a road trip searching for consistency after a string of defeats.
