Severstal Cherepovets at SKA Saint Petersburg
SAINT PETERSBURG, Russia (Interstat) — The SKA Saint Petersburg defense was impenetrable and its offense erupted for four second-period goals in a commanding 5-0 victory over Severstal Cherepovets in Kontinental Hockey League action on Friday afternoon at Ice Palace Saint Petersburg.
Goaltender Artemy Pleshkov stopped all 23 shots he faced to secure the shutout for the home side, which snapped a two-game losing streak and improved its season record to 30 wins, 25 losses and one tie across all competitions. Severstal, which entered the game with a superior overall record of 39 wins and 27 losses, was shut out for the first time in recent weeks and saw its two-game winning streak halted.
The game’s turning point came in a dominant middle frame by SKA. After a first period that saw only a power-play goal from Roссo Grimaldi at the 12:45 mark, assisted by Yegor Zelenov and Andrei Pedan, the floodgates opened in the second.
Defenseman Markus Phillips, who had taken a holding penalty earlier in the period, redeemed himself by scoring an unassisted goal at 25:03 to double the SKA lead. Just over two minutes later, at 27:19, forward Marat Khairullin netted his first of the afternoon to make it 3-0. The onslaught continued when Scott Wilson converted a feed from Pedan and Nikolai Goldobin just 64 seconds after that.
SKA capped the scoring late in the third period, with Khairullin netting his second goal of the game and 19th of the season at 56:37, assisted by Matvei Korotky and Matvei Polyakov. Khairullin finished with two goals on four shots, while Pedan contributed two assists for a multi-point night.
The defensive corps, led by Ivan Vydrenkov and Danila Galenyuk, limited Severstal’s high-danger chances throughout. Severstal goaltender Vsevolod Skotnikov was pulled after allowing four goals on 20 shots through two periods. The team managed only 23 shots total against Pleshkov and a structured SKA system that killed all three of its penalties.
The result avenged a shootout loss to Severstal in the teams’ previous meeting on Feb. 18 and gave SKA a 2-1-0 advantage in the season series. The pregame projection by Interstat, which gave SKA a 54.30 percent probability to win with an expected score of 3-2, was surpassed by the home team’s wide margin of victory.
Severstal, which had defeated Lada Togliatti 3-1 on Wednesday, will look to rebound on Monday when it hosts Ak Bars Kazan. SKA begins a two-game road trip on Monday at Traktor Chelyabinsk.
