CSKA Moscow at Lada Togliatti

TOGLIATTI, Russia (Interstat) — In a stunning Kontinental Hockey League upset, the last-place Lada Togliatti rallied with two third-period goals to defeat playoff-bound CSKA Moscow 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Lada Arena.

The victory, sealed by Tomas Jurco’s power-play winner with 4:47 remaining, snapped a three-game losing skid for Lada and handed CSKA a costly defeat in its chase for postseason positioning. The home team improved its record to 17 wins and 40 losses, while CSKA fell to 30-26.

The game defied pregame projections from Interstat, which gave CSKA a 73.4% probability to win and simulated a 3-2 final score in its favor. Instead, Lada goaltender Alexander Trushkov was the central figure, turning aside 33 of 34 shots to backstop the comeback. CSKA’s Dmitry Gamzin made 15 saves on 17 shots in the loss.

The first two periods were a story of missed opportunities for CSKA, which dominated play but could not solve Trushkov. Lada’s discipline waned early, taking three minor penalties in the first period, but the CSKA power play failed to convert. The pattern continued in the third when Lada’s Daniil Bokun took a high-sticking penalty at the 2:03 mark, but the visitors still could not break through.

The deadlock was finally broken at the 7:52 mark of the third period. CSKA’s Sergei Kalinin netted his second goal of the season, converting assists from Dmitry Samorukov and Mac Hollowell to give the Muscovites a 1-0 lead.

The momentum shifted quickly. CSKA’s Pavel Karnaukhov was called for cross-checking just over a minute after the goal, and Lada capitalized on the ensuing power play. Defenseman Colby Williams wired his second of the season past Gamzin at 13:53, with Riley Sawchuk earning the assist to tie the game 1-1.

CSKA’s penalty troubles compounded just over a minute later when Jeremy Roy was sent off for holding. Nine seconds into that power play, Lada struck again. Jurco collected a pass from Alex Cotton and Andrei Chivilev and buried his sixth goal to put Lada ahead for good at 15:13.

CSKA pulled Gamzin for an extra attacker late but could not find an equalizer against Trushkov and the Lada defense, which killed a late tripping penalty to Maxim Belousov to secure the two points.

For CSKA, Denis Zernov led all skaters with five shots on goal. The loss halted a modest two-game win streak for the Army Men, who had defeated Red Star Kunlun in overtime and shut out Spartak Moscow in their previous contests. They now look ahead to a crucial road matchup against SKA Saint Petersburg on Saturday.

Lada, which had lost 5-3 to Barys Astana in its previous outing, will seek to build on the upset when it hosts Ak Bars Kazan on Thursday. The two teams will meet again in Moscow on March 20.
