Metallurg Magnitogorsk at Barys Astana
ASTANA, Kazakhstan (Interstat) — Ruslan Iskhakov scored twice, including the game-winner in overtime, to lift Metallurg Magnitogorsk to a 3-2 victory over Barys in a Kontinental Hockey League game Tuesday night at Barys Arena.
The win improved Metallurg’s league-leading record to 42-13, while Barys fell to 18-39.
The game was a tighter affair than projected, with Interstat’s game simulator having predicted a 4-1 Metallurg win and its ELO system giving the visitors an 84.9% probability of victory. The result continued Metallurg’s dominance in the season series, having now won all three meetings.
Iskhakov opened the scoring early for the visitors, converting a pass from Nikita Mikhailis at the 6:04 mark of the first period just after serving a tripping penalty himself. Barys responded before the intermission, however, as Tyce Thompson netted his 12th goal of the season on a power play at 17:24, assisted by Michael Vecchione and Reilly Walsh.
The second period saw Iskhakov strike again, restoring Metallurg’s lead at 25:06 with his 16th goal, assisted once more by Mikhailis. The middle frame was marked by physical play, including coincidental roughing minors to Metallurg’s Vladimir Tkachyov and Barys’s Max Willman.
Barys pushed back in the third period, tying the game at 54:39 on a goal from defenseman Reilly Walsh, his 11th, with Vecchione earning his second assist of the night. That sent the game to an extra period, where Iskhakov completed his decisive two-goal performance.
Metallurg goaltender Alexander Smolin earned the win with 36 saves on 38 shots. His counterpart for Barys, Andrei Shutov, stopped 32 of 35 shots in the loss.
The game was penalty-filled, with Metallurg taking five minors to Barys’s three. Despite the infractions, special teams were not a decisive factor, with each team scoring once on the power play.
For Metallurg, the victory snapped a brief two-game skid that included an 8-1 road loss to Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg last Sunday. Barys, coming off a 5-0 home loss to SKA St. Petersburg last Thursday, has now lost two straight and eight of its last ten.
Metallurg continues its road trip with a game at Amur Khabarovsk on Friday. Barys remains at home to host Red Star Kunlun, also on Friday.
