Dynamo Moscow at Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod
NIZHNY NOVGOROD, Russia (Interstat) — Defying pregame projections, Dynamo Moscow delivered a decisive road performance to defeat Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod 4-2 in a Kontinental Hockey League matchup Sunday at Trade Union Sport Palace.
The victory avenged a recent overtime loss to Torpedo and continued Dynamo’s positive momentum, marking their third consecutive win. The outcome flipped the script on statistical forecasts, as Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 4-1 victory for Torpedo, though its ELO rating system gave Dynamo a slight edge to win.
Dynamo set the tone early, capitalizing on a power play midway through the first period. With Torpedo’s Anton Silayev serving a tripping minor, Yegor Rimashevsky opened the scoring at the 9:41 mark, beating Torpedo goaltender Ivan Kulbakov for his seventh goal of the season. The visitors controlled the pace for much of the opening frame, outshooting the hosts.
The middle period saw Torpedo find an answer. Amir Garayev cut the deficit to 2-1 at 24:06, finishing a setup from defenseman Arseny Varlakov. The assist was Varlakov’s first point of the season. The momentum was short-lived, however. After a Torpedo penalty for high-sticking, Dynamo’s power play struck again. Just 11 seconds into the man advantage, forward Dylan Sikura restored the two-goal lead, netting his 21st of the season off assists from Daniil Pylenkov and Jordan Weal.
Dynamo extended its lead to 4-1 before the second intermission. Semyon Der-Arguchintsev found the back of the net at 37:10, with an assist from Artyom Shvets-Rogovoi, seemingly putting the game out of reach.
To its credit, Torpedo mounted a push in the third period. During a power play resulting from a delay-of-game penalty to Dynamo’s Igor Ozhiganov, Vasily Atanasov scored his 18th goal at 48:38, making it a 4-2 game and injecting late drama. Torpedo pressed for another, but Dynamo’s defense and goaltender Vladislav Podyapolsky held firm. Podyapolsky earned the win with 23 saves on 25 shots.
Sikura sealed the victory with an empty-net goal at 57:48, his second of the game and 22nd of the season, assisted by Maxim Mamin. Torpedo’s Atanasov took an interference penalty in the final minute, extinguishing any last hope for the home side.
Defensively, Dynamo was led by Kirill Adamchuk, who registered a game-high five hits. For Torpedo, Varlakov added a hit to his assist for a multi-stat performance.
With the win, Dynamo Moscow improves its season record across all competitions to 30 wins and 25 losses. Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod falls to 31 wins and 25 losses. The season series between the clubs now stands at two wins apiece, with Dynamo winning 4-0 on Dec. 1 and 4-1 on Oct. 5, and Torpedo claiming a 4-3 overtime decision on Jan. 12 prior to Sunday’s contest.
Dynamo Moscow continues its schedule at home against HC Sochi on Thursday. Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod remains at home to host Red Star Kunlun on Wednesday.
