Vecchione’s Late Goal Lifts Barys to 3‑1 Home Victory Over CSKA in KHL Matchup
ASTANA, Kazakhstan (Interstat) — Michael Vecchione scored twice, including the game-winner with 37 seconds remaining, to lead Barys Astana to a 3-1 Kontinental Hockey League victory over CSKA Moscow on Saturday.
Tyce Thompson opened the scoring for the hosts in the first period. CSKA’s Maxim Sorkin tied the game late in the third, but Vecchione answered 86 seconds later. He added an empty-net goal at the final horn.
Goaltender Adam Scheel made 25 saves for Barys, which improved to 16-31. CSKA, which fell to 22-25, got 25 saves from Alexander Samonov. The result defied pre-game projections that heavily favored the visiting side.
The teams will meet again in Moscow on Thursday.
