Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk at HC Sochi

SOCHI, Russia (Interstat) — Two Kontinental Hockey League teams heading in opposite directions meet Saturday when HC Sochi hosts Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk at the Bolshoy Ice Dome.

Neftekhimik (20-21-0), riding a modest wave of momentum, will look to capitalize on a struggling Sochi (11-25-0) squad that sits near the bottom of the league standings. The visitors enter having won two of their last three, including a decisive 5-0 victory over Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod on Dec. 28. Goaltender Filipp Dolganov was perfect in that shutout, stopping all 36 shots he faced.

Sochi, conversely, has lost three of its last four games. However, the club is coming off a stunning 8-4 offensive explosion against powerhouse SKA Saint Petersburg on Dec. 28. That performance snapped a three-game losing streak and provided a rare bright spot in a difficult season.

A key matchup will feature Neftekhimik defenseman Fyodor Kroshchinsky against Sochi’s hot forward Sergei S. Popov. Kroshchinsky has been a steady presence on the blue line, recording an assist in the recent win over Torpedo. Popov, however, is coming off a dominant three-point performance (two goals, one assist) in the win over SKA and has five points in his last five games, emerging as Sochi’s most dangerous offensive threat.

Historically, Neftekhimik has shown resilience, with six of their 20 wins coming in overtime or a shootout. Sochi has struggled to find consistency, particularly defensively, allowing four or more goals in four of their last six contests.

The game marks the start of a critical stretch for both clubs. Neftekhimik embarks on a lengthy road trip following this contest, with games at Salavat Yulaev Ufa, Ak Bars Kazan and Barys Astana looming next week. Sochi begins a tough homestand, facing Dynamo Moscow twice and Lada Togliatti before hitting the road for a daunting trip against Metallurg Magnitogorsk and SKA.

Puck drop is set for Saturday evening in Nizhneimeretinskaya Bukhta. With Neftekhimik aiming to climb above .500 and Sochi desperate to build on its last explosive win, the clash presents a pivotal opportunity for both sides in the KHL’s midseason grind.
