Severstal Cherepovets at Salavat Yulaev Ufa

Preview: Severstal at Salavat Yulaev, KHL

UFA, Russia (Interstat) — A surging Severstal Cherepovets squad will look to avenge a recent loss when it visits a struggling Salavat Yulaev Ufa in a Kontinental Hockey League matchup Sunday at Ufa Arena.

The visiting Steelmen (26-13-0) enter on a strong run, having won seven of their last 10 games, including a 4-3 overtime victory against HC Sochi on Thursday. Their form contrasts sharply with that of the home side. Salavat Yulaev (16-23-0) has lost four of its last six and sits well outside the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference.

This game is a quick rematch of a Dec. 18 contest in Cherepovets, which Salavat Yulaev won 2-1. Alexander Zharovsky scored one of the Ufa goals in that victory and will be a central figure again. The forward is in excellent individual form, recording four points (one goal, three assists) in his last two games, including a goal and two assists in Thursday’s 4-2 win over Amur.

For Severstal, defenseman Thomas Gregoire is a key catalyst. He scored a goal on a season-high seven shots in the overtime win over Sochi and has been a consistent offensive threat from the blue line. His performance will be critical against a Ufa team that recently bested them.

Despite their losing record, Salavat Yulaev has shown an ability to play spoiler, evidenced by their win in Cherepovets and a 4-1 victory over Ak Bars Kazan earlier this month. Their success has often hinged on Zharovsky’s line producing offense.

Severstal, however, boasts the deeper and more consistent team. With a potent attack led by Kirill Tankov and Ilya Ivantsov, who combined for three points against Sochi, they will test a Ufa defense that has allowed three or more goals in five of its last eight games.

The schedule adds another layer, as both teams face a quick turnaround. Severstal travels to face Ak Bars Kazan on Tuesday, while Salavat Yulaev hosts Dinamo Minsk the same day. Securing points Sunday is crucial for both: Severstal to solidify its standing near the top of the Western Conference, and Salavat Yulaev to keep its fading postseason hopes alive.

Puck drop is set for Sunday, Dec. 28, 2025, in Ufa.
