Salavat Yulaev Ufa at Severstal Cherepovets

CHEREPOVETS, Russia (Interstat) — In a result that defied pregame projections, Salavat Yulaev Ufa capitalized on early opportunities and weathered a persistent attack to edge Severstal Cherepovets 2-1 in a Kontinental Hockey League matchup Thursday afternoon at Ice Palace.

The victory provided a vital road win for Salavat Yulaev, which entered the contest with a 15-21 record and was given only a 44 percent chance to win by statistical models. Severstal, a strong home side now 24-13, was projected to win comfortably but instead saw its offense stifled after an early response.

The visitors from Ufa struck quickly, setting the tone for the night. Just over two minutes into the first period, Alexander Zharovsky netted his ninth goal of the season, assisted by Yegor Suchkov and Artyom Gorshkov. Salavat Yulaev doubled its lead before the period was four minutes old. During a power play resulting from a Severstal penalty for interference on the goaltender, Maxim N. Kuznetsov scored his sixth, with Pyotr Khokhryakov earning the assist at the 6:29 mark.

Severstal halved the deficit late in the opening frame. At 19:15, Danil Veryayev scored his third goal of the season, injecting life into the home crowd and setting up a tense final two periods.

The remainder of the game became a special teams battle and a goaltending showcase, particularly at the Severstal end. Despite outshooting Salavat Yulaev 17-15, Severstal could not solve Salavat Yulaev netminder Alexander Samoilov after the first period. Samoilov, listed at 6-foot-1 and 179 pounds, stopped 15 of the 16 shots he faced to secure the win.

Severstal’s offensive push was hampered by discipline issues. The home team accrued seven minor penalties throughout the game, including two for too many players on the ice. Key defensemen Vladimir Grudinin and Nikita Kamalov were among those sent to the box, with Kamalov taking a cross-checking penalty at the final buzzer. Salavat Yulaev was not immune, taking three minors of its own, but its penalty kill stood firm.

Severstal’s defensemen activated aggressively in search of the equalizer, combining for 16 of the team’s 17 shots on goal. Nikita Kamalov led all players with five shots, while Vladimir Grudinin and Ioannis Kaldis added pressure from the blue line. The efforts of Ruslan Abrosimov and others, however, could not generate a second goal against a structured Salavat Yulaev defense.

The loss marks a missed opportunity for Severstal to solidify its standing near the top of the KHL’s Western Conference. Salavat Yulaev, struggling in the East, secured a hard-fought road victory against a superior opponent.

Salavat Yulaev will look to build on the win when it hosts Ak Bars Kazan on Saturday. Severstal aims to rebound on Tuesday when it welcomes CSKA Moscow to Cherepovets. The two teams are scheduled for a rematch in Ufa on Sunday, Dec. 28.
