Sibir Novosibirsk at Barys Astana

ASTANA, Kazakhstan (Interstat) — Anton Krasotkin made 37 saves and Vyacheslav Leshchenko scored a second-period goal as Sibir Novosibirsk edged Barys Astana 2-1 in a shootout in a Kontinental Hockey League game Sunday at Barys Arena.

The victory, sealed after a scoreless overtime, gave Sibir a sweep of the two-game regular-season series between the clubs after a 4-1 win in Novosibirsk just six days earlier. It also marked the third time in four meetings this season that these teams required extra time, with Sibir now holding a 3-1 advantage in the season series.

Sibir, which entered the game with the worst record in the KHL, improved to 11-23-0 across all competitions. Barys fell to 12-22-0.

The game was a tense, low-scoring affair dominated by the goaltenders. Krasotkin was the busier of the two, turning aside all 16 shots he faced in the third period and overtime to preserve the tie. His counterpart, Andrei Shutov, made 27 saves for Barys in a losing effort.

After a scoreless first period, Sibir struck first at the 28:54 mark of the second. Arkhip Nekolenko fed Vyacheslav Leshchenko, who beat Shutov for his second goal of the season. Leshchenko led all Sibir skaters with six shots on goal.

Barys pressed heavily in the third period, finally breaking through with its net empty for an extra attacker. With just 1:34 remaining in regulation, Mason Morelli pounced on a rebound from a Tyce Thompson shot and slid the puck past Krasotkin to tie the game 1-1. Reilly Walsh earned the secondary assist on Morelli’s eighth goal of the season.

The goal forced overtime, where Barys continued to carry the play, outshooting Sibir 4-0 in the five-minute three-on-three period, but Krasotkin stood firm.

In the shootout, Sibir’s shooters proved decisive, converting twice while Krasotkin stopped both Barys attempts to secure the extra point for the visitors.

The result defied the pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 2-1 victory for Barys, while its ELO rating system gave Sibir a 56.7% probability to win.

The game was a penalty-filled contest, with Barys taking the only infraction. Mason Morelli was sent off for a minor penalty in the first period.

Sibir will look to build on the road victory when it returns home to face Avangard Omsk on Dec. 16. Barys begins a two-game road trip at Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg on the same date.
