Barys Astana at Metallurg Magnitogorsk
MAGNITOGORSK, Russia (Interstat) — Metallurg Magnitogorsk reaffirmed its dominance over Barys Astana with a decisive 5-2 victory in a Kontinental Hockey League matchup Saturday night at a raucous Arena Metallurg.
The win improved Metallurg’s record across all competitions to 24 wins and 8 losses, solidifying its position among the league’s elite. Barys, meanwhile, continued to struggle, falling to 11 wins and 20 losses on the season.
The game began in stunning fashion as Barys forward Tyce Thompson silenced the home crowd just 17 seconds into the first period, capitalizing on assists from Vsevolod Logvin and Max Willman. The visitors managed to maintain their early lead despite taking a penalty just over four minutes into the game.
That penalty, however, set the stage for Metallurg’s response. Just 11 seconds after Barys’ Mason Morelli was sent off for hooking, Alexander Petunin netted the equalizer for the home side on the ensuing power play, assisted by Robin Press and Nikita Mikhailis.
The game remained deadlocked until the second period, when Metallurg’s offensive depth took over. Roman Kantserov broke the tie at the 24:10 mark, scoring his 20th goal of the season with helpers from Dmitry Silantyev and goaltender Ilya D. Nabokov.
The middle frame concluded with a devastating offensive burst from the home team. Silantyev scored at 37:43, assisted by Vladimir E. Tkachyov and Danila Palivko, to extend the lead. Just 40 seconds later, Kantserov struck again, netting his second of the night and 21st of the season to complete a rapid-fire two-goal sequence. Silantyev and Tkachyov earned their second assists of the period on the play.
Barys showed a flicker of life late in the third period when Maxim Mukhametov scored an unassisted goal with just over 11 minutes remaining to cut the deficit to two. Any momentum was swiftly extinguished, however, as Metallurg defenseman Valery Orekhov restored the three-goal cushion less than two minutes later, sealing the victory with his fifth goal of the campaign.
In goal, Ilya D. Nabokov backstopped the win for Metallurg, turning aside 30 of the 32 shots he faced. The loss extended Barys’ woes against Metallurg this season, having now been outscored 14-4 in their three meetings, including a 4-1 loss on Nov. 9 and a 5-1 defeat on Sept. 18.
The final score mirrored the projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 5-2 Metallurg victory. The analytics firm’s ELO system had also given the home team an 86.20 percent probability to win.
Metallurg Magnitogorsk next travels to face Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg on Wednesday. Barys Astana will look to regroup on the road against Sibir Novosibirsk on Monday.
