Ak Bars Kazan at Red Star Kunlun

MYTISHCHI, Russia (Interstat) — Patrik Rybar made 36 saves and Alexander Barabanov scored the decisive shootout goal to lift Ak Bars to a 3-2 victory over the Shanghai Dragons in a Kontinental Hockey League game Sunday at Municipal‘nyj Stadion Stroitel‘.

The game was tied after regulation and a five-minute overtime period, forcing the shootout where Ak Bars secured the extra point. The win improved Ak Bars’ record across all competitions to 19 wins and 11 losses, while Shanghai moved to 14-13.

Rybar was the central figure for the Dragons, turning aside all but two of the 38 shots he faced through overtime to keep his team competitive. His performance gave Shanghai a chance to overcome a multi-goal deficit.

The Dragons opened the scoring late in the first period. Austin Wagner netted his fifth goal of the season at the 17:17 mark, with Spencer Foo earning the assist. The momentum was briefly stalled when Shanghai’s Gage Quinney was sent off for a penalty later in the period.

Shanghai doubled its lead midway through the second period when Riley Sutter scored his second of the campaign, assisted by Vladimir Kuznetsov, making it 2-0.

Ak Bars mounted its comeback starting late in the second frame. Artyom Galimov cut the deficit to one with his fifth goal at 31:45, assisted by Alexander Chmelevski and Ilya Safonov. Just over seven minutes later, Barabanov scored his first of the night, tying the game with help from Kirill Semyonov and Nikita Lyamkin. The goal was Barabanov’s fifth of the season and sent the teams to the second intermission deadlocked.

After a scoreless third period and overtime, the contest was decided in the shootout, where Barabanov scored again for Ak Bars to clinch the victory.

Defensively, Alexander Bryntsev led Shanghai with four hits. Vladislav Valentsov, Adam Clendening, and Ben Harpur also contributed physically for the Dragons.

The result defied the pregame projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a 4-3 Ak Bars win and whose ELO system gave Ak Bars a 69.5 percent probability of victory.

Ak Bars, coming off a 3-2 road win against Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk on Friday, will continue its schedule on the road against Spartak Moscow on Tuesday. Shanghai, which defeated Lokomotiv Yaroslavl 4-3 in overtime last Wednesday, begins a road trip at Traktor Chelyabinsk on Wednesday. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Kazan on Nov. 30.
