Spartak Moscow at CSKA Moscow

MOSCOW (Interstat) — A struggling Spartak Moscow squad will look to halt its early-season slide when it visits crosstown rival CSKA Moscow in a Kontinental Hockey League matchup Tuesday at CSKA Ice Palace.

The Red-Whites (1-3-0) have dropped three straight, including a 4-3 overtime loss to Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod on Sunday. Forwards Mikhail Maltsev, Alexander Pashin and Ivan Morozov were the most productive players for Spartak in the defeat, which followed a 2-1 loss to Severstal Cherepovets and a 3-0 shutout by Dinamo Minsk. Their lone win came in a 4-3 season-opening victory over HC Sochi on Sept. 7.

Conversely, the Red Army team (3-1-0) arrives with momentum after a 2-1 road victory over Severstal Cherepovets on Sunday. Forwards Ivan Drozdov, Pavel Karnaukhov and Denis Zernov led the offensive effort for CSKA. The club’s only blemish is a 2-0 shutout loss at HC Sochi last Friday, bookended by a 1-0 win over Admiral Vladivostok and a commanding 6-2 season-opening win against Dynamo Moscow.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, CSKA is projected to win 3-2. The analytics firm’s ELO system gives the home side a 51 percent probability of victory.

Following the derby, Spartak embarks on a challenging three-game road trip through Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk and Magnitogorsk. CSKA, meanwhile, will host Lokomotiv Yaroslavl on Thursday before heading out on a three-game road trip of its own to Magnitogorsk, Vladivostok and Khabarovsk.

The puck is scheduled to drop at 7:30 p.m. local time.
