Doosan Bears rally late to edge NC Dinos at Jamsil
SEOUL (Interstat) — On Wednesday evening, the Doosan Bears defeated the NC Dinos 6-5 at Jamsil Stadium in Seoul in a game that lasted 3 hours, 24 minutes before an announced crowd of 16,994. NC outhit Doosan 15-12 but could not hold a late lead. Doosan improved to 65 wins, 62 losses and 4 ties. NC fell to 58 wins, 70 losses and 2 ties.
The Bears opened the scoring with a run in the second inning. NC answered with three runs in the fourth to take control. Doosan cut into the deficit with a run in the fifth. NC added a run in the seventh, and Doosan matched it in the bottom half. NC scored once more in the eighth, but Doosan responded with three runs in the bottom of the eighth to move ahead for good. The rally turned a two-run deficit into a one-run victory and made the final innings the most important stretch of the game.
Both teams created traffic early. Kim Ju-won opened the game with an infield single, but NC could not advance him. Doosan put two runners on in the first when Park Jun-soon singled and Yang Eui-ji walked, but Kim Min-suk grounded out to first. NC’s Han Jae-hwan singled down the right-field line in the second, though Kim Han-byul struck out. Doosan’s Jo Soo-haeng doubled to left, but Yun Jun-ho popped out and Jung Soo-bin struck out. An Jae-seok and Park Jun-soon later singled, and a double steal moved both runners into scoring position. Yang Eui-ji’s sacrifice fly to center brought in a run. Kim Min-suk flied out to center to end that threat.
NC starter Thompson turned in a solid outing, working six innings and allowing seven hits and two earned runs with two walks and five strikeouts. Doosan starter Logue lasted five innings, giving up nine hits and three earned runs with one walk and five strikeouts. Severino provided the biggest swing of the night for Doosan, going 2 for 4 with a home run and one RBI. Lee Yong-chan followed with a scoreless inning, allowing one hit and striking out two. Bae Jae-whan worked 1 1/3 innings for NC, allowing no hits and one earned run with one strikeout. Lee Byeong-heon recorded two outs for Doosan without allowing a hit or a run. Kim Jeong-woo then tossed a scoreless inning, surrendering no hits and one walk with one strikeout. Jo Soo-haeng went 3 for 4 with an RBI. Kim Min-suk finished 1 for 5 with two RBIs. Shin Yeong-woo faced one batter for NC, allowing one hit and no earned runs without recording an out.
The Dinos collected 15 hits but struggled to convert them into a bigger rally. Kim Ju-won reached on an infield single in the first inning and later singled to center field to drive in a run. Cheon Jae-hwan struck out early but recovered with a single to center field that brought home a run, and he also stole a base. Blaine Crim doubled to left-center and scored after moving on a sacrifice bunt. Kim Whee-jip singled down the left-field line and delivered an RBI, while Kim Hyung-jun singled to right field and drove in a run. Oh Tae-yang doubled down the left-field line and collected an RBI. Han Jae-hwan singled down the right-field line and added hits to left and center-left. Choi Jeong-won was hit by a pitch and executed a sacrifice bunt. Kwon Hui-dong singled in front of left field. Park Min-woo singled to right field. The hits kept pressure on Doosan, but NC left too many runners aboard.
Doosan’s attack was more compact but came through in key spots. Jo Soo-haeng doubled to left in the second inning, then singled to left-center and down the left-field line. Severino homered to right field and later singled to right. Yang Eui-ji drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and also reached on a hit by pitch. Kim Min-suk delivered two RBIs. An Jae-seok singled to right field and later added another hit. Park Jun-soon singled in front of right field and to center-left. Jung Soo-bin drew a walk. Yun Jun-ho grounded out and struck out. The Bears did not match NC’s hit total, but they produced the timely hits that mattered most.
The bullpens shaped the finish. NC’s Thompson left after six innings with his team in front. Bae Jae-whan allowed one earned run over 1 1/3 innings. Shin Yeong-woo allowed a hit without retiring a batter. Doosan’s Logue departed after five innings with five strikeouts. Lee Yong-chan pitched a scoreless inning with one hit and two strikeouts. Lee Byeong-heon recorded two outs without allowing a hit. Kim Jeong-woo worked a scoreless inning with one walk and one strikeout. Those relief efforts kept Doosan within reach before the eighth-inning rally.
The late innings featured the game’s most important sequence. NC scored in the top of the eighth to build a 5-3 lead. In the bottom half, Doosan loaded the bases and pushed across three runs. Jo Soo-haeng singled down the left-field line to drive in one run, and Kim Min-suk brought home two more. The Bears took a 6-5 lead and turned the game over to their bullpen. NC put together chances in the final inning, including a single by Kim Hyung-jun and a single by Park Min-woo, but a double play ended the threat. The Dinos could not answer the Bears’ late surge.
Doosan’s win capped a back-and-forth night at Jamsil Stadium. The Bears had also won the previous meeting between the teams, and they used another late push to finish ahead. NC had chances throughout but stranded runners in several innings. The Dinos’ 15 hits were not enough to overcome Doosan’s three-run eighth.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of NC Dinos 7, Doosan Bears 3. Interstat’s ELO system had given Doosan a 55.7 percent probability to win.
