Landers rally past Twins with four-run eighth inning
INCHEON (Interstat) — The Shinsegae Landers scored four runs in the eighth inning and rallied to beat the LG Twins 4-3 on Wednesday evening at Munhak Baseball Stadium. The win lifted Shinsegae to 57-69-5, while LG dropped to 71-58-2. The announced attendance was 13,957.
Kim Keon-woo was Shinsegae’s top performer, striking out nine over five innings while allowing two earned runs on three hits and three walks. The start was a bounce-back effort for Kim, who had allowed four earned runs on eight hits over five innings in his previous outing against Kiwoom. Kim kept LG off balance with a sharp fastball and a breaking ball that produced swings and misses throughout the early innings. He struck out Park Hae-min and Austin Dean in the first, Oh Ji-hwan and Song Chan-eui in the second, Park Dong-won and Lee Jae-won in the third, and Austin Dean again in the fourth. His nine strikeouts helped Shinsegae stay within reach before the bullpen took over.
LG starter Park Si-won matched Kim for much of the night. Park tossed five scoreless innings, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out seven. He stranded runners in the first, third and fourth. In the first, Park Seong-han singled to center, but Park struck out Jeong Jun-jae and Jeon Ui-san around a fielder’s choice. In the third, Park Seong-han doubled to center-left and Jeong Jun-jae walked, but Guillermo Heredia hit into a fielder’s choice and Jeon Ui-san struck out. In the fourth, Kim Jae-hwan and Cho Hyeong-woo singled with one out, but Park retired Kim Jeong-min on a flyout to left to end the inning. Park also worked a clean second inning around a single by Choi Ji-hoon, striking out Kim Jae-hwan and Cho Hyeong-woo. In the fifth, he struck out Park Seong-han and retired Jeong Jun-jae and Guillermo Heredia in order.
LG had early chances of its own. In the first, Park Hae-min struck out, Gu Bon-hyeok reached on a dropped third strike and Austin Dean struck out. In the second, Moon Bo-gyeong walked, but Oh Ji-hwan and Song Chan-eui struck out and Moon Jeong-bin flied out to right. In the third, Park Dong-won and Lee Jae-won struck out around a Park Hae-min groundout. In the fourth, Gu Bon-hyeok singled to center and Oh Ji-hwan walked, but Song Chan-eui fouled out to shortstop to end the threat.
Shinsegae’s early offense came in spurts but could not produce a run against Park. Cho finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and played a central role in the comeback. Park Seong-han had a single in the first and a double in the third. Jeong Jun-jae walked in the third and later added a single. Kim Jae-hwan singled in the fourth, and Choi Ji-hoon singled in the second. In the third, Kim Jeong-min reached on a dropped third strike before Park Seong-han doubled and Jeong Jun-jae walked, but the inning ended without a run. Shinsegae also put two runners on in the fourth but could not score. The Landers left runners aboard and trailed after five innings.
LG broke through in the fifth with two runs and added another in the sixth. The Twins took advantage of Kim Keon-woo’s control issues and then scored against Takeda Shota, who allowed one earned run on two hits in an inning of relief. Gu Bon-hyeok helped drive the offense, finishing 2-for-3 with one RBI. Oh Ji-hwan also contributed with a single and a walk, while Austin Dean singled during the rally. LG’s scoring rallies included a walk by Gu Bon-hyeok, a single by Austin Dean and a run-scoring single by Oh Ji-hwan. Song Chan-eui grounded out to the pitcher to bring home another run, and Gu later singled to center to drive in Choi Won-yeong for the Twins’ third run. LG’s lead reached 3-0, and its bullpen appeared ready to protect it.
Jon Kennedy provided two hitless, scoreless innings out of the LG bullpen, striking out two. Go Woo-suk later allowed one hit and no earned runs over an inning. For Shinsegae, Lee Geun-wook and Choi Min-jun each pitched a scoreless inning without allowing a hit. Jeon Young-jun followed with a scoreless inning of his own, allowing one hit and striking out two. Takeda had allowed the one earned run earlier, but the Landers’ relief work kept LG from adding more after the sixth.
The decisive swing came in the eighth, when Shinsegae scored four times to take a 4-3 lead. Park Seong-han flied out to center to start the inning, but Jeong Jun-jae singled to right to keep the inning alive. Cho delivered a two-run hit during the rally, and the Landers capitalized on miscues and timely contact. The inning erased LG’s three-run advantage and put Shinsegae in front for the first time. The home crowd at Munhak Baseball Stadium, announced at 13,957, responded as the Landers completed the comeback.
Jeon Young-jun then helped close out the win, and LG’s final chances ended with a groundout by Moon Jeong-bin, a flyout by Park Dong-won and a flyout by Choi Won-yeong. The Twins finished with six hits, while Shinsegae had 11. LG’s pitchers combined to strike out nine batters, with Park leading the way. Shinsegae’s staff struck out 11, paced by Kim’s nine.
