KT Wiz, Hanwha Eagles Play to 11-Inning Tie in Daejeon

DAEJEON (Interstat) — Ryu Hyun-jin delivered six dominant innings and Hanwha Eagles rallied late, but neither side could break through in extra innings as KT Wiz and Hanwha played to a 4-4 tie Wednesday night at Daejeon Hanbat Baseball Stadium. The game, played before 10,194 spectators, lasted 4 hours, 14 minutes and was declared a tie after 11 innings under KBO rules. KT, the visiting team, moved to 71-45-5. Hanwha, the home team, moved to 52-62-8. KT finished with nine hits, while Hanwha had eight. Both teams scored four runs.

Ryu was the central figure for most of the evening. The Hanwha left-hander allowed two hits and no earned runs over six innings, walked one and struck out nine. He kept KT off the scoreboard through the first six innings, escaping the only real jam he faced in the fourth. Choi Won-jun reached on an infield single, Kim Min-hyuck moved him to second with a sacrifice bunt, and Ahn Hyun-min walked. Ryu then struck out Sam Hilliard and Kim Hyun-soo to end the threat. Ryu also struck out the side in the sixth and finished with nine strikeouts, matching the game’s most dominant individual performance.

Hanwha gave Ryu a lead in the third. Lee Do-yun walked with one out, Sim Woo-jun popped out to third, and Choi In-ho singled to center field to score Lee Do-yun. Yonathan Perlaza followed with a single in front of left field, moving Choi In-ho to third, but Kang Baek-ho grounded out to first to end the inning. That 1-0 lead held until KT’s bullpen and lineup changed the game in the seventh.

KT starter Bae Je-seong lasted 4 1/3 innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs with four walks and three strikeouts. Mon Yong-ik followed with 2 1/3 innings of one-hit, scoreless relief, walking two and striking out three. Kim Jeong-woon added 1 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out two. Their work kept KT close long enough for the offense to strike.

The Wiz broke through in the seventh against Hanwha’s bullpen. Sam Hilliard singled to center field and Kim Hyun-soo singled to right-center, putting runners on the corners. Kim Sang-su struck out, but Heo Kyoung-min singled to center field to score Hilliard and move Kim Hyun-soo to second. Han Seung-taek then singled down the left-field line to score Kim Hyun-soo. Oh Yoon-suk followed with a single to shortstop that scored Heo Kyoung-min, completing a three-run rally that put KT ahead 3-1.

KT added another run in the eighth. Kim Hyun-soo walked, and Kim Sang-su doubled to right field to score Kwon Dong-jin. That gave KT a 4-1 lead. Hanwha answered in the bottom of the eighth when Park Jung-hyun homered to left field, a two-run shot that brought Choi Yu-bin home and cut the deficit. The Eagles kept pushing and eventually pulled even, turning the game into a bullpen battle over the final innings.

Hanwha’s relief corps was sharp. Kim Seo-hyeon pitched one scoreless inning with no hits, one walk and three strikeouts. Joo Hyun-sang followed with a perfect inning, striking out three. Cho Dong-uk worked 1 1/3 innings, allowing no hits and one earned run with one walk and one strikeout. Kim Jong-soo pitched a scoreless inning with one hit and one strikeout. Their combined effort kept KT from adding to its lead after the eighth.

KT’s bullpen matched that work in the later innings. After Hanwha tied the score, Mon Yong-ik, Kim Jeong-woon and Sugimoto Koki held the Eagles in check through the ninth and into extra innings. The game moved to the 10th and then the 11th without a resolution. Under KBO rules, the contest was declared a tie after 11 innings.

KT had the final meaningful chance in the 11th. Jang Jin-hyuk doubled to right-center field to open the inning, giving the Wiz a runner in scoring position. Heo Kyoung-min struck out, Ryu Hyun-in lined out to second, and Oh Yoon-suk grounded out to short, stranding Jang. Hanwha did not score in its final opportunity, and the teams settled for the tie.

Jang Jin-hyuk finished 2 for 2 with one RBI for KT. Choi Won-jun reached base on an infield single and later walked. Kim Sang-su doubled and drove in a run. Heo Kyoung-min, Han Seung-taek and Oh Yoon-suk each delivered run-scoring hits during the seventh-inning rally. For Hanwha, Choi In-ho singled and drove in a run, Perlaza added a single, and Park Jung-hyun’s late home run was the club’s biggest swing of the night.

The tie added another unusual result to a season series that has been mostly favorable to KT. The Wiz had won the previous meeting 13-3 on Tuesday, Sept. 15, and had taken six of the first 10 head-to-head matchups between the clubs. Hanwha remained at home for its next game, with Samsung Lions visiting Friday, Sept. 18. KT was set to return home to face LG Twins on Friday, Sept. 18.

The result marked another tie in a season that has included several for both clubs. KT had also played an 11-inning tie against Doosan on Aug. 27 and an 11-inning tie at Shinsegae Landers on Aug. 21. Hanwha had three straight scoreless ties at Shinsegae Landers from Aug. 25-27.
