Wiz rally past Bears 5‑4 with two-run ninth
SUWON, South Korea (Interstat) — The KT Wiz rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning Wednesday night and walked off with a 5-4 victory over the Doosan Bears in front of 10,307 at Suwon Baseball Stadium.
The game took 3:17 to complete in the evening. KT improved to 65-42-2, while Doosan dropped to 59-51-4. Both teams finished with nine hits in a game that featured several lead changes and strong starting pitching.
KT starter Daniel Davis and Doosan starter Zach Logue matched strikeout totals with seven each. Davis allowed four hits and two earned runs over six innings, while Logue also worked six innings and allowed six hits and one earned run. Neither was involved in the final decision, as the game shifted to the bullpens and eventually to a dramatic finish.
Doosan opened the scoring in the second inning. Yang Eui-ji walked and moved to second when Yunior Severino also walked. Kim Dae-han followed with a single to center field that drove in Yang from second and gave the Bears a 1-0 lead.
KT answered in the third. Han Seung-taek reached on an error by the third baseman, then Kwon Dong-jin struck out. Choi Won-jun singled to center to put runners at first and second for Kim Hyun-soo, who singled to right to load the bases. Ahn Hyun-min then hit an infield single to the left side, and a throwing error by the shortstop allowed two runs to score. By the time the inning ended, the Wiz held a 2-1 lead.
KT extended its lead in the fourth when Jang Sung-woo homered to center field. That solo shot made it 3-1 and gave the Wiz a two-run cushion. Jang finished the game 1 for 3 with the home run and one RBI, and he also drew a walk later in the contest.
The Bears cut into the deficit in the fifth. Lee Yu-chan walked with one out, and Kim Dae-han struck out before Jo Soo-haeng grounded out to second, allowing Lee to advance to second. Park Chan-ho then singled in front of the left fielder and drove in Lee, pulling Doosan within 3-2.
The score remained 3-2 until the top of the seventh, when Doosan manufactured another run. Kim Dae-han popped out to second, but Jo Soo-haeng singled to center. Park Chan-ho followed with a single to left that moved Jo to second. Jung Soo-bin then singled to left, and during the defensive play, Jo came around to score the tying run. The inning ended with the game knotted at 3-3.
Doosan grabbed its first lead since the early innings in the top of the eighth. Kim Min-suk singled to left and Yunior Severino sacrificed him to second. Lee Yu-chan was intentionally walked, and Kim Dae-han flied out to left, allowing Kim Min-suk to advance to third. Jo Soo-haeng then delivered a single in front of the right fielder, scoring Kim Min-suk and giving the Bears a 4-3 advantage. For the inning, it was the second run-scoring hit of the game for Doosan’s bottom half of the lineup.
KT mounted a threat in the bottom of the eighth. Sam Hilliard singled to left with one out, and Jang Sung-woo struck out. Kim Sang-su popped out to short, leaving Hilliard stranded and keeping Doosan ahead 4-3 heading into the ninth.
Doosan could not add insurance in the top of the ninth. Jung Soo-bin struck out, and An Jae-seok popped out to short. Yang Eui-ji walked to keep the inning alive, but Kim Min-suk reached on a fielder’s choice and forced the runner out at second to end the Bears’ half of the inning.
The decisive moment came in the bottom of the ninth. Facing a one-run deficit, the Wiz put together a two-run rally against the Doosan bullpen and won the game without making an out to waste. The comeback inning was capped by timely hitting from the top of the KT order, with Kim Hyun-soo playing a central role. Kim Hyun-soo finished the game 2 for 5 with two RBIs. His two-run contribution in the final inning flipped the score to 5-4 and gave the Wiz their second consecutive and walk-off victory in the series.
Before the ninth, KT’s bullpen had kept the Bears from extending their lead after the eighth. Kim Jeong-woon worked a scoreless inning with one strikeout, and relief work from Jeon Yong-ju, Son Dong-hyun and Sugimoto Koki helped bridge the gap. Sugimoto allowed two hits and one earned run over 1⅓ innings, while Son allowed one earned run in one-third of an inning and Jeon recorded one out while allowing one hit. The decisive finish made winners of the Wiz after their bullpen had given Doosan a late advantage.
Doosan’s bullpen also had strong moments earlier in the game. Takada Takuto threw one scoreless inning, and Kim Taek-yeon followed with a scoreless inning of his own while striking out two. But those efforts were not enough to protect the 4-3 lead in the ninth.
The loss came for Doosan despite a solid effort from Logue, the top performer for the Bears. Logue matched Davis with seven strikeouts and allowed only one earned run, but he left with the game still undecided. Doosan also received production from the bottom of its lineup, particularly Jo Soo-haeng and Kim Dae-han, who each delivered run-scoring hits in key moments.
For KT, the win continued a strong season and tightened the gap with the top of the standings. The Wiz had lost the opener of the series to Doosan on Tuesday, but Wednesday’s ninth-inning rally evened the two-game set. The teams were scheduled to meet again Thursday at the same ballpark in the rubber game of the series.
The game was a tight, tense contest from start to finish. KT took control with a three-run stretch in the third and fourth innings, only for Doosan to chip back with single runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth. The Bears pushed ahead in the eighth, but the Wiz answered when it mattered most in the ninth. Unlike the earlier innings, when runs came through a combination of hits and defensive mistakes, the final rally was a crisp, clean burst of offense that sealed the game without needing extra innings.
Doosan had won the previous day by a 3-1 score at the same stadium. That result, combined with Wednesday’s comeback, gave the two-game set a split before Thursday’s decisive matchup. With both teams scheduled to meet again immediately, the ninth-inning finish added another layer to the series. The back-and-forth nature of the game also reflected the general pattern in the season series, which has included close scores, ties and lopsided outcomes across the two teams’ meetings.
KT’s record now includes 65 wins, 42 losses and 2 ties. Doosan’s record stands at 59 wins, 51 losses and 4 ties. The attendance and time of game were recorded as the Wiz celebrated a walk-off win under the evening sky.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of KT Wiz 5, Doosan Bears 4, and Interstat’s ELO system had projected KT with a 56.70 percent probability to win.
