Kiwoom at Kia
GWANGJU, South Korea (Interstat) — The Kia Tigers and Kiwoom Heroes open a two-game set Saturday evening at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field, with the first-place Tigers looking to bounce back after a loss to the same opponent.
First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. under clear skies and 83 degrees.
Kia (49-43-3) leads the KBO standings but dropped Friday’s series opener 8-5 to last-place Kiwoom (34-59-2). The Tigers have won eight of the 10 head-to-head meetings this season.
Kiwoom will send right-hander An Woo-jin to the mound. An, a player to watch, earned the win Friday despite allowing two earned runs over five innings, striking out eight. In his previous start July 7 at KT Wiz, he took a loss despite six innings of three-run ball. On June 30 against LG, An fired 5 2/3 shutout innings with 11 strikeouts.
For Kia, third baseman Kim Do-yeong is a player to watch. He went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in Friday’s loss. Over his last 10 games, Kim has five multi-hit performances, including a two-hit, two-RBI game July 9 at Lotte and a homer and two RBI on July 7 at Lotte.
Kia starter James Naile took a no-decision Friday, allowing four earned runs over six innings. He struck out seven.
The Tigers have lost three straight after dropping two of three at home to Hanwha. Kiwoom has won two of its last three, including a victory over Samsung before Friday’s win.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 4-3 victory for Kia. Its ELO system gives the Tigers a 68.4 percent probability to win.
The series concludes Sunday at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field, where Kia looks to reassert control against a Kiwoom team that has shown recent life.
