Hanwha at Kia
Gwangju, South Korea (Interstat) — The Hanwha Eagles visit the Kia Tigers on Wednesday evening at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field, with first pitch scheduled under rainy skies and temperatures near 82 degrees.
Hanwha (40-40-3) enters the game having won three of its last four decisions, including a 6-4 victory over the NC Dinos on July 9. Right-hander Owen White has been a dominant force during that stretch, posting a 3-0 record across his last three starts while allowing zero earned runs in 17 2/3 innings. White threw 5 innings of 5-hit, 0-earned-run ball against NC, struck out 4, and earned the win. He previously tossed 7 scoreless innings at LG Twins on July 3 and 5 2/3 scoreless frames at Shinsegae Landers on June 27.
Left fielder Oh Jae-won also drove in three runs on three hits in the win over NC.
Kia (45-39-4) counters with veteran left-hander Yang Hyeon-jong, who is 2-0 with a save in his last three outings. Yang allowed 1 earned run over 5 innings in a 5-2 win at Lotte Giants on July 9, striking out 1. He earlier worked 5 innings of 1-run ball against Shinsegae Landers in a 6-6 tie on July 1 and gave up 3 earned runs in 5 innings during a 10-3 victory at Kiwoom Heroes on June 24.
Designated hitter Harold Castro homered and drove in a run against Lotte, while right fielder Na Sung-bum added a home run and two RBIs in the same game.
The clubs played to a 0-0 tie Tuesday in the series opener. Kia holds a 5-4 edge in the season series, but Hanwha has won three of the last five meetings, including a 5-1 victory June 11 and an 11-8 win May 7 at Gwangju.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 4-3 Hanwha victory, though the ELO system gives Kia a 51.7 percent probability to win.
Following Wednesday’s game, the teams meet again Thursday, then Hanwha returns home for three games against LG Twins. Kia hosts Kiwoom Heroes for a three-game weekend series.
