Kiwoom at KT

SUWON, South Korea (Interstat) — The first-place KT Wiz look to extend their mastery over the KBO’s last-place club, hosting the Kiwoom Heroes in a Wednesday evening matchup at Suwon Baseball Stadium.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. local time under rainy conditions, with the temperature at 81 degrees.

KT (46-35) has won seven of the last eight meetings between the teams, including Tuesday’s 3-0 shutout. Kiwoom (29-56-1) has dropped nine of its last 11 overall.

The pitching rematch features the same starters from Tuesday, when KT’s So Hyeong-jun outdueled Kiwoom’s An Woo-jin.

So Hyeong-jun (7.0 IP, 7 H, 0 ER, 5 K) earned the win and has been dominant in his past two outings, allowing one earned run over 13 innings. In his last five starts, the right-hander has a 2.68 ERA with 22 strikeouts over 31 innings.

An Woo-jin took the loss Tuesday (6.0 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 6 K), despite a solid effort. The Heroes’ ace has been inconsistent, however, yielding five earned runs in a loss on June 24 before tossing 5.2 shutout innings with 11 strikeouts against LG on June 30. Over his last five starts, An Woo-jin has a 3.69 ERA with 40 strikeouts in 29 innings.

The Heroes have struggled offensively, scoring one run or fewer in five of their last seven losses. Kiwoom’s bullpen has been a bright spot, with relievers combining for three scoreless innings Tuesday.

KT’s offense has been opportunistic, plating three runs on eight hits in Tuesday’s win. The Wiz have scored four or more runs in five of their last seven victories.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projected final score is KT Wiz 3, Kiwoom Heroes 2. Interstat’s ELO system gives KT a 71.4% probability of winning.

The teams are scheduled to meet again Thursday in the third game of this four-game series. After that, Kiwoom travels to Hanwha for a four-game set beginning July 16, while KT visits LG for four games starting the same day.
