Lotte at Doosan
SEOUL, South Korea (Interstat) — The Doosan Bears host the Lotte Giants on Thursday evening at Jamsil Stadium, with first pitch set for 7 p.m. under a forecast of 82 degrees and rain.
The series finale features a rematch of Wednesday’s starters: Lotte right-hander Elvin Rodríguez and Doosan left-hander Wes Benjamin. Rodríguez earned the win Wednesday in a 5-2, 10-inning decision, allowing one earned run over seven innings with eight strikeouts. He has won three of his past four outings, posting a 1.80 ERA over that span with 35 strikeouts in 25 innings.
Benjamin took the loss Wednesday despite a strong performance, yielding no earned runs on three hits while striking out 10 over six innings. The lefty has a 2.84 ERA over his past three starts but has received limited run support, with Doosan scoring two runs or fewer in four of his last five appearances.
The Bears (39-39-3) enter one game below .500, while the Giants (34-42-2) sit eight games under. Doosan holds a 5-4 edge in the season series.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-4 Lotte victory, but the ELO system gives Doosan a 56.4 percent probability to win.
Rodríguez will look to build on a stellar June. Aside from a June 5 loss to Hanwha where he allowed six earned runs, he has posted a 1.62 ERA in his other four starts, with 35 strikeouts in 25 innings. Benjamin, meanwhile, has been sharp despite the hard-luck losses, with 25 strikeouts and a 2.70 ERA in his past three outings.
Lotte’s bullpen excelled Wednesday, with Iimura Shota, Kim Won-jung and Park Chi-guk combining for 3 1/3 scoreless innings. Doosan’s relief corps of Park Chi-guk and Kim Dong-ju also held Lotte scoreless in extra innings.
The game carries weight for both clubs. Doosan aims to close the first half above .500, while Lotte seeks its second consecutive win after dropping six of its previous eight.
Following Thursday’s contest, the Giants travel to face the KT Wiz on Friday, while the Bears head to Kiwoom Heroes.
