Samsung at KT
SUWON, South Korea (Interstat) — The KT Wiz host the Samsung Lions on Wednesday evening at Suwon Baseball Stadium, with first pitch set under cloudy skies and a temperature of 73 degrees.
KT (35-24) enters the game in second place in the KBO, while Samsung (33-25-1) sits a half-game behind in third. The Wiz took the series opener 5-2 on Tuesday, snapping a two-game losing streak and improving to 4-1 against the Lions this season.
The pitching matchup features two right-handers who faced each other just one day earlier. KT’s Ko Young-pyo (6-2, 3.12 ERA) earned the win Tuesday, allowing one earned run on four hits over six innings with six strikeouts. The 29-year-old has won four consecutive decisions, including a seven-inning, two-run performance against NC on June 3 and a six-inning, two-run outing at Doosan on May 28. Ko has been particularly effective against Samsung this season, posting a 1.50 ERA in two starts covering 12 innings.
Samsung counters with Choi Won-tae (4-4, 4.50 ERA), who took the loss Tuesday after surrendering four earned runs on six hits in 6⅔ innings. The 30-year-old has struggled of late, losing his last two starts while allowing seven earned runs over 12 innings. However, he pitched a complete-game shutout on May 28 against Shinsegae Landers, scattering two hits over seven innings with eight strikeouts. Choi will need to rediscover that form to slow a KT lineup that has scored five runs in three of its last four games.
Samsung’s offense has been inconsistent, scoring three runs or fewer in four of its last five games. Left fielder Koo Ja-wook, who went 1-for-4 with an RBI on Tuesday, remains the Lions’ most dangerous bat, hitting .312 with 12 home runs. The Lions will also look to rebound from a 2-5 road trip to Kia and NC that saw them drop four of six.
KT’s bullpen has been a strength, with Park Yeong-hyun and Son Dong-hyun combining for two scoreless innings Tuesday. The Wiz have won six of their last nine overall and are 19-10 at home this season.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-3 KT victory, and its ELO system gives the Wiz a 50.9 percent probability to win.
The two teams meet again Thursday in the series finale before Samsung returns home to face Shinsegae Landers and KT hosts NC Dinos.
