Samsung at Kia

GWANGJU, South Korea (Interstat) — The Samsung Lions and Kia Tigers meet Sunday for a day-night doubleheader at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field, with first place in the Korea Baseball Organization standings on the line.

Samsung (33-23-1) arrives with a series split in hand after taking Saturday’s opener 3-2 in 10 innings. The Lions have won four of their past six overall and own the league’s best record. Kia (31-27-1) has dropped two of its last three, but the Tigers have won five of the past seven meetings between the clubs dating to April.

Weather at first pitch is forecast at 75 degrees with clouds.

Pitching Matchups

Samsung is expected to turn to right-hander Jang Chan-hee, who has been sharp recently. Jang earned the win in Saturday’s extra-inning affair, allowing one earned run on three hits over 5 1/3 innings while striking out four. Over his past three outings — two of which were scoreless — he has surrendered one earned run in 9 1/3 innings.

Kia counters with veteran lefty Yang Hyeon-jong, who also started Saturday. Yang took a no-decision in the 3-2 loss, scattering four hits over five scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Prior to that, he struggled against LG on May 31 (4 2/3 IP, 3 ER) but had won two of his previous three starts, including a 5-4 win over Shinsegae on May 23.

Both pitchers are working on short rest for the doubleheader, so bullpens could decide the outcomes.

Recent History

The teams have alternated results in their head-to-head series. Samsung won Saturday’s game in extras, while Kia took Friday’s contest 5-2. The Tigers pounded the Lions 16-7 on May 17, but Samsung answered with a 5-2 win the next day. In April, the Lions took two of three in Gwangju.

Projections

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-4 Kia victory for the first game. Its ELO system gives Samsung a 51.30 percent probability to win, reflecting the Lions’ strong season standing.

Players to Watch

For Samsung, shortstop Oh Sun-woo went 1 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs in Saturday’s win. For Kia, first baseman Kim Do-young has key hits in recent matchups.

Looking Ahead

Samsung travels to KT Wiz for a three-game series beginning Tuesday. Kia visits Hanwha Eagles for the same three-game set. Both teams return home next weekend: Samsung hosts Shinsegae Landers; Kia hosts Doosan Bears.
