Shinsegae at Kia
GWANGJU, South Korea (Interstat) — The Shinsegae Landers visit the Kia Tigers on Saturday afternoon at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field, with first pitch scheduled under cloudy skies and a temperature of 72 degrees.
Shinsegae enters with a 22-23-1 record, while Kia sits at 23-22-1, setting up a crucial late-May matchup between two clubs separated by just one game in the standings.
The pitching duel features a rematch of Friday’s series opener. Right-hander Hwang Dong-ha (5.1 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 4 K in a 5-2 win Friday) will start for Kia. Hwang has been dominant, winning four consecutive decisions, including a complete-game shutout May 2 against KT Wiz (7 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 8 K) and a seven-inning gem against Doosan on May 14 (6 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 3 K). Over his last five starts, Hwang has allowed more than two earned runs only once.
For Shinsegae, right-hander Choi Min-jun gets the ball. Choi has struggled recently, taking the loss Friday (5.1 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 5 K) and posting a 5.40 ERA over his last three outings. His season has been uneven: a win May 16 against LG (5 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 3 K) was followed by a short, ineffective start May 10 at Doosan (2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER).
Friday’s game marked the third head-to-head meeting this season. Kia leads the series 2-1, having won the opener March 28 in a 7-6 thriller before the Landers answered with an 11-6 victory March 29. Shinsegae’s offense was held to two runs Friday, while Kia center fielder Kim Ho-ryung provided the key blow with a three-run homer.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-2 Kia victory, and its ELO rating gives the Tigers a 54.6 percent chance to win.
Shinsegae has dropped six of its last seven games, including a sweep at Kiwoom earlier this week. Kia has won four of its last five, with the only blemish a 5-3 home loss to LG on Thursday.
The two clubs conclude their series Sunday afternoon.
