Hanwha at KT
SUWON, South Korea (Interstat) — The Hanwha Eagles and KT Wiz continue their weekend series Saturday afternoon at Suwon Baseball Stadium, with the first-place Wiz looking to rebound after dropping Friday’s opener.
First pitch is set for the afternoon under clear skies, with temperatures forecast at 89 degrees Fahrenheit.
KT (24-15-1) holds a strong grip on the top of the KBO standings, while Hanwha (19-21-1) sits below .500 but enters with momentum after a 5-3 victory in the series opener Friday.
The rematch features a compelling pitching duel between Hanwha right-hander Wang Yan-cheng and KT righty Ko Young-pyo.
Wang earned the win in Friday’s game, allowing two earned runs on five hits with eight strikeouts over five innings. He has been steady recently, posting a 3-1 record across his last five starts with a 2.64 ERA over 26 2/3 innings, striking out 22 batters.
Ko took the loss Friday despite a strong outing of his own. He worked seven innings, surrendering three earned runs on five hits while striking out 10. Over his last five starts, Ko has a 4.00 ERA with 36 strikeouts in 29 innings.
Friday’s win snapped a three-game losing streak for Hanwha against KT. The Wiz had won the previous three meetings this season, including a three-game sweep in Daejeon from March 31-April 2, outscoring the Eagles 36-23 in that series.
Hanwha’s offense was boosted Friday by left fielder Moon Hyun-bin, who went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. The Eagles have won four of their last five games overall.
KT’s bats struggled to support Ko on Friday but have been productive for much of the season. The Wiz scored 18 runs in a win over Shinsegae Landers on May 13 and have averaged 7.1 runs over their last 10 games.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 4-3 Hanwha win, while the ELO system gives KT a 54.2 percent probability to win.
The teams conclude the series Sunday afternoon at Suwon. Hanwha returns home Tuesday to face the Lotte Giants, while KT travels to face the Samsung Lions.
