Hanwha at Kia
GWANGJU, South Korea (Interstat) — The Hanwha Eagles and Kia Tigers meet Thursday evening at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field, with the Tigers aiming to rebound from a loss while the Eagles seek consecutive victories.
First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. under clear skies. The forecast calls for 65 degrees Fahrenheit.
Kia (15-17-2) enters with a 52 percent probability to win, according to Interstat’s ELO system, which projects a 4-2 final score. The Tigers took two of three from Hanwha earlier this week, winning 12-7 on Tuesday before falling 7-2 on Wednesday. Kia also won three consecutive games against the Eagles in mid-April, giving the Tigers a 4-1 edge in the season series entering Thursday.
Hanwha (13-19-1) rides momentum from Wednesday’s win, powered by left-hander Ryu Hyun-jin. The veteran threw six innings, allowing one earned run on four hits with eight strikeouts. It was Ryu’s second quality start in his past three outings after a pair of rough performances. On April 30 against Shinsegae, he allowed four earned runs in 5 2/3 innings, and on April 24 against NC, he surrendered five earned runs in 6 1/3 innings. Ryu also tossed seven scoreless innings against Lotte on April 18, earning a win.
For Kia, first baseman Aderlin Rodriguez remains a dangerous bat. In Wednesday’s loss, Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with two home runs and two RBIs. The previous night, he homered again in a losing effort, going 1-for-4 with three RBIs in the Tigers’ 12-7 victory. Rodriguez has been Kia’s most productive hitter against Hanwha this week, providing the bulk of the Tigers’ offense.
Both teams begin new series following Thursday’s contest. Hanwha returns home Friday to face LG for three games, while Kia travels to Lotte for a three-game set.
Hanwha’s rotation behind Ryu has been inconsistent. The Eagles have lost 10 of their past 14 games, with the bullpen struggling in multiple defeats. Wednesday’s win saw relievers Lee Min-woo and Cho Dong-uk each pitch a scoreless inning.
Kia’s pitching has also been uneven. Starter Adam Oller lasted six innings Wednesday but allowed five earned runs on seven hits. Reliever Jang Jae-hyouk gave up a run in two innings of work. The Tigers have dropped four of their past seven games, though their offense, led by Rodriguez, has kept them competitive.
The teams are separated by two games in the standings, with Kia sitting sixth and Hanwha eighth among the 10 KBO clubs. Thursday’s matchup offers both a chance to gain ground in a tight middle of the table.
