BASEBALL PREVIEW: Kia Tigers at NC Dinos
CHANGWON, South Korea (Interstat) — The Kia Tigers and NC Dinos, separated by a single game in the standings, open a three-game series Tuesday evening at Masan Baseball Stadium, with both sides seeking traction in a tightly packed early-season race.
Kia (12-12-1) visits after a series split with the Lotte Giants, including a 5-5, 11-inning tie Sunday in which right-hander Sung Yeong-tak fired two scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out five. Sung has not allowed an earned run over his past seven appearances dating to April 15, covering 9 1/3 innings. He has posted a 0.00 ERA and 12 strikeouts in that span, emerging as a reliable multi-inning weapon for a Tigers bullpen that owns a 3.98 ERA.
NC (11-13) took two of three from Hanwha over the weekend, powered by right-hander Drew Verhagen, who earned the win Sunday with 4 2/3 innings of three-run ball. Verhagen has a 4.70 ERA over three starts this season, but he has logged at least 4 2/3 innings in each outing. He will be operating on short rest if he appears in this series, though his workload suggests he is stretched out for a traditional start.
The Dinos won two of three meetings in Gwangju on April 3-5, including a 6-0 shutout on April 4. NC outscored Kia 11-5 in that series. However, the Tigers’ .500 record marks the first time since April 11 they have been at the break-even point.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 4-3 Kia victory, while its ELO model gives NC a 52.6% win probability. Betting lines list the Tigers as slight favorites at +1.5 on the run line, with the over/under set at 9½ runs. First-pitch temperature is forecast at 68 degrees with cloudy skies.
Kia’s offense has averaged 3.6 runs per game over its last five contests. NC has scored 5.0 runs per game in that same span, driven by Park Kun-woo’s two-homer performance April 24-26.
Tuesday’s game starts a critical stretch for both clubs. The teams meet again Wednesday and Thursday before Kia returns home to face KT Wiz and NC travels to LG Twins.
