NC Dinos Rout Shinsegae Landers to Earn Series Split

CHANGWON-SI, South Korea (Interstat) — Matthew Davidson broke out of a profound slump with a home run and three RBIs, and Cheon Jae-hwan launched a decisive three-run shot as the NC Dinos routed the Shinsegae Landers 9-2 on Sunday afternoon at Masan Baseball Stadium.

A crowd of 13,677 watched the Dinos (8-10) salvage the final game of a two-game weekend series and snap a four-game losing streak. The Landers (10-8), who had won 11-3 on Saturday, saw their two-game win streak end.

The most important sequence of the game unfolded in the bottom of the fourth inning, turning a tight contest into a comfortable NC lead. Trailing 2-0 early, the Dinos had scratched back to tie the game by the second inning. The 2-2 deadlock held until the fourth, when NC’s offense erupted against Shinsegae reliever Jang Ji-hun.

With one out, Davidson sparked the rally with a double down the left field line. After a walk to Seo Ho-cheol, Kim Hyung-jun delivered an RBI single to center, scoring Davidson to give NC its first lead at 3-2. Cheon Jae-hwan then stepped to the plate and demolished a pitch to left field for a three-run homer, clearing the bases and extending the advantage to 6-2. The inning continued as the Dinos batted around, adding another run on an RBI single from Park Kun-woo to cap a five-run, six-hit frame that put the game out of reach.

Davidson, the NC designated hitter who had been hitless in his last 13 official at-bats over four games, added a two-run homer to center field in the seventh inning off Lee Ki-soon to provide the final margin. He finished 2 for 4.

The Landers struck first, pushing across a single run in the fifth inning on an infield single by Guillermo Heredia. Their other run came in the ninth, but the early 2-0 lead proved insufficient.

NC’s pitching staff, led by starter Toda Natsuki, effectively contained the Shinsegae lineup. Toda earned the win, working four innings and allowing one earned run on five hits while striking out five. The Dinos’ bullpen was flawless, with five relievers — Bae Jae-whan, Lim Ji-min, Kim Young-kyu, Chun Sa-min and Chung Dong-yoon — combining for five scoreless innings, yielding only one hit and striking out two.

Shinsegae starter Lee Ki-soon took the loss, surrendering two earned runs on two hits over two innings of work. Landers’ reliever Chung Dong-yoon had a bright spot with a perfect inning of relief, striking out one.

The result defied pregame projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a 3-2 Shinsegae victory and gave the Landers a narrow 50.10 percent probability to win. The combined score of 11 runs fell under the posted over/under line of 10.5.

The Landers next travel to face the Samsung Lions for a three-game series beginning Tuesday. The Dinos will hit the road for a three-game set against the Kiwoom Heroes, also starting Tuesday.
