Oller’s Gem Leads Tigers Past Dinos for Rare Win
GWANGJU, South Korea (Interstat) — In a stark reversal of recent form and pregame projections, the last-place Kia Tigers, powered by a dominant pitching performance from starter Adam Oller, shut out the first-place NC Dinos 3-0 on Sunday evening at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field.
The result, witnessed by a crowd of 20,500, snapped the Dinos’ five-game winning streak and handed the Tigers just their second victory in eight games this season. Interstat’s game simulator had projected an 8-2 NC victory, but Oller and the Tigers’ bullpen rendered those forecasts meaningless.
The most critical sequence of the game unfolded in the bottom of the second inning against NC starter Toda Natsuki. After two quick outs, the Tigers’ offense sparked to life. Harold Castro singled down the left field line, Kim Sun-bin grounded him to second, and Han Jun-su worked a walk. Kim Ho-ryung then delivered a clutch single to right field, loading the bases.
Jeong Hyun-chang followed and reached on a fielder’s choice grounder. While Kim Ho-ryung was forced out at second, Han Jun-su moved to third and Castro crossed the plate, giving Kia a 1-0 lead on a play where NC failed to record a single hit with runners in scoring position. That unearned run proved to be all the support Oller would require.
Oller, the game’s top star, was magnificent. The right-hander tossed seven shutout innings, scattering just three hits and striking out five. He faced minimal trouble, with NC’s only serious threat coming in the sixth. Kim Jung-ho singled and Park Min-woo doubled with two outs, putting runners on second and third. Oller calmly induced a groundout from Matthew Davidson to third base to end the inning, preserving the 2-0 lead Kia had built in the fourth.
The Tigers added that insurance run in the fourth off Natsuki. Kim Do-young singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a Kim Sun-bin single. Han Jun-su then lifted a sacrifice fly to center, making it 2-0. Natsuki (0-1) took the loss, allowing two earned runs on six hits over six innings of work.
Kia capped the scoring in the eighth against NC reliever Kim Young-kyu. Park Jae-hyun led off with a double, was bunted to third, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Castro, providing the final 3-0 margin.
The Tigers’ bullpen sealed the shutout with two perfect innings. Jung Hai-young worked a clean eighth, and after Jeon Sang-hyun allowed a two-out single in the ninth, Kim Beom-su entered to strike out the final batter, earning the save.
The Dinos, who had outscored the Tigers 11-2 in the first two games of this series, managed only four hits total and went 0 for 3 with runners in scoring position. Their season record falls to 6-2, while the Tigers improve to 2-6.
The victory provides a crucial momentum shift for Kia as they prepare to host the Samsung Lions for a three-game series starting Tuesday. The Dinos, meanwhile, will look to rebound when they return home to face the LG Twins, also beginning Tuesday.
