NC Dinos Shut Out Kia Tigers Behind Taylor’s Strong Start

GWANGJU, South Korea (Interstat) — The NC Dinos continued their dominant start to the Korea Baseball Organization season, riding a powerful first inning and a masterful combined pitching performance to a 6-0 victory over the struggling Kia Tigers on Saturday evening at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field.

A crowd of 20,500 watched as the visiting Dinos (6-1) seized control immediately against Tigers starter Lee Tae-yang. Shortstop Kim Ju-won launched Lee’s offering over the left-field wall for a leadoff home run, setting the tone for the night. The Dinos were not done, adding five more runs in the frame to bury the Tigers early. Park Min-woo doubled, Matthew Davidson singled and a costly error by Kia catcher Kim Hyung-jun on a stolen base attempt allowed another run to score. The inning was prolonged by three walks, forcing Lee from the game after recording just two outs.

The early outburst rendered the rest of the game a formality, as NC’s pitching staff efficiently silenced the Kia bats. Starter Taylor, the game’s top star, delivered five scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out four. He worked around traffic, inducing a double play in the first inning and stranding runners in scoring position in the second and fifth frames. This outing was a bounce-back for Taylor, who took a loss on March 29 against the Doosan Bears despite a quality start.

The Dinos bullpen preserved the shutout with four flawless innings of relief. Shin Yeong-woo struck out two in a perfect sixth, Lee Jun-hyeok and Lim Ji-min handled the seventh, and Mok Ji-hoon closed out the final two innings, allowing just one hit.

Kia’s offense, which has sputtered throughout the young season, managed only five singles and never advanced a runner past second base after the fifth inning. The Tigers (1-6) went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position and grounded into two double plays, squandering opportunities to chip away at the large deficit.

NC added insurance in the sixth inning when designated hitter Matthew Davidson connected for a solo home run to left field off reliever Hwang Dong-ha, who was charged with two runs over 3 1/3 innings. The Dinos tallied 10 hits total, with Davidson and Park Min-woo each collecting two.

The most important part of the game was unequivocally the top of the first inning. Kim Ju-won’s instant offense and the subsequent offensive barrage against Lee Tae-yang established a six-run lead before Kia even came to bat. This early cushion allowed NC manager Kang In-kwon to manage his pitching staff with ease, pulling Taylor after five efficient innings and cycling through relievers to keep everyone fresh for the series finale and the upcoming week.

The result defied pregame expectations, as Kia had been installed as a slight favorite with a +1.5 run spread. The combined six runs also fell well under the projected over/under line of 9.0, highlighting the effectiveness of the Dinos’ pitchers.

The victory marks NC’s fifth consecutive win and solidifies their hold atop the early standings. They have outscored opponents 48-25 over their first seven games. Conversely, the Tigers have lost six of seven and will look to avoid a series sweep when the teams meet again on Sunday afternoon in Gwangju.

The Dinos will conclude their three-game set with the Tigers on Sunday before returning home to Changwon to begin a series against the LG Twins on Tuesday. The Tigers, after Sunday’s game, will welcome the Samsung Lions for a three-game homestand starting Tuesday.
