Rio Grande Valley Vipers vs. South Bay Lakers

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (Interstat) — The South Bay Lakers used a balanced offensive attack and a dominant second-quarter surge to pull away from the Rio Grande Valley Vipers for a 112-97 victory in an NBA G League matchup on Friday night at the UCLA Health Training Center.

The game turned decisively in the second period. After a tightly contested first quarter that saw the Lakers lead by just four points, South Bay unleashed a 20-6 run midway through the second. The burst was fueled by the versatile play of forward Dalton Knecht, who scored nine points during the stretch, and stifling team defense that forced several Vipers turnovers and contested shots. The Lakers outscored the Vipers 38-24 in the quarter to take an 18-point halftime lead, a margin Rio Grande Valley would not seriously threaten for the remainder of the game.

South Bay’s victory was a collective effort, with six players scoring in double figures. Knecht finished with 24 points and 13 rebounds, controlling the paint and the perimeter. Drew Timme added 26 points and eight rebounds, providing a consistent inside scoring presence. Kobe Bufkin contributed 18 points, while Nick Smith orchestrated the offense with 11 points and five assists. Arthur Kaluma and Anton Watson provided valuable energy off the bench, combining for 19 points and 12 rebounds.

For Rio Grande Valley, point guard Daishen Nix delivered another stellar individual performance in a losing effort. Nix played 43 minutes and recorded 35 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists, narrowly missing a triple-double. His effort continued a remarkable stretch of play, following games of 34, 33, 33 and 20 points in his previous four outings. However, Nix received limited scoring support. Cameron Matthews was the only other Viper to reach double figures, scoring 11 points. The Vipers’ offense often stagnated outside of Nix’s creation, and they were unable to match the Lakers’ depth or sustained defensive pressure.

The loss dropped Rio Grande Valley to 31-21 on the season, while South Bay improved to 35-17, solidifying its position near the top of the league standings. The Lakers avenged two earlier losses to the Vipers from January. South Bay will look to continue its momentum when it hosts the Stockton Kings on Sunday. Rio Grande Valley will aim to regroup on its road trip.
