Austin Spurs vs. Rio Grande Valley Vipers
EDINBURG, Texas (Interstat) -- The Rio Grande Valley Vipers used a dominant first half to build a substantial lead and then held off a persistent Austin Spurs rally to secure a 117-106 victory in a G League matchup Tuesday night at Bert Ogden Arena.
The most critical phase of the game occurred from the opening tip, as the Vipers established immediate control with an explosive offensive performance. Rio Grande Valley erupted for 36 points in the first quarter, connecting on a series of early three-pointers and dunks to stun the visiting Spurs. The momentum continued into the second period, where the Vipers added another 32 points. This early surge gave the home team a 68-49 halftime advantage, a deficit from which Austin could never fully recover.
The Spurs, who entered the game with the league’s best record, chipped away at the lead throughout the second half. They outscored the Vipers 57-49 after halftime, cutting the deficit to single digits on multiple occasions behind the play of Kyle Mangas and Harrison Ingram. Each time Austin mounted a push, however, Rio Grande Valley had an answer, often from guard Daishen Nix or forward Cameron Matthews, to stabilize the game.
Nix orchestrated the Vipers’ offense effectively, contributing key baskets and assists, while Matthews provided relentless energy on both ends. Their efforts were part of a balanced Vipers attack that consistently found open shots against the Austin defense, particularly in the decisive first half.
The win improved Rio Grande Valley’s season record to 31 wins and 20 losses, solidifying its playoff positioning. Austin, despite the loss, remains atop the league standings at 35-16. The teams split their four-game season series, with each winning on its home court.
The game’s outcome was heavily influenced by the initial 24 minutes, where the Vipers’ offensive execution created a cushion that proved insurmountable, even against an Austin team that has been the class of the G League for much of the season. The Spurs’ comeback attempts showcased their resilience, but the early hole, dug against a sharp-shooting Vipers squad on its home floor, was ultimately too deep.
