Stockton Kings vs. Austin Spurs
SAND LAKE, Fla. (Interstat) — In a frantic NBA G League showdown that required an extra period, the Stockton Kings edged the Austin Spurs 119-117 in overtime on Friday afternoon at the Orange County Convention Center.
The game was a tale of explosive offense and a dramatic late comeback. Stockton built a commanding 15-point lead after the first quarter, scoring 32 points to Austin’s 17. The Kings maintained control for much of the contest, holding a 53-43 advantage at halftime and an 84-78 lead entering the fourth quarter.
However, the Austin Spurs, led by a spectacular performance from David Jones, mounted a relentless charge in the final period. Jones scored 31 points, with 15 coming in the fourth quarter and overtime, to spearhead the rally. His driving layup with 48 seconds left in regulation gave Austin a 109-107 lead, its first since the opening minutes.
Stockton’s DaQuan Jeffries answered with a layup and a free throw with 11 seconds remaining to put the Kings back ahead 110-109. Austin’s Stanley Umude was then fouled on a 3-point attempt with seven seconds left and calmly sank all three free throws, putting the Spurs up 112-110.
After a timeout, Stockton’s final play in regulation resulted in two offensive rebounds but two missed shots, sending the game to overtime tied at 112.
The extra period was a tense, back-and-forth affair. Austin scored the first four points, but Stockton responded with a 7-1 run to close the game. The decisive sequence came in the final seconds with the score tied at 117. After Austin’s David Jones missed the second of two free throws with 32 seconds left, Stockton’s Devin Carter drove for a layup with 27 seconds remaining to provide the final margin. Austin’s last possession ended without a shot as time expired.
The most important part of the game was the final minute of regulation and the entirety of the overtime period, a stretch defined by clutch plays, lead changes, and high-pressure free throws. Umude’s three free throws under immense pressure appeared to seal a stunning comeback win for Austin, only for Stockton to force overtime and ultimately execute in the final moments to secure the victory.
For Stockton, now 10-5, the win was a balanced effort. Jeffries finished with 24 points and Carter added 22, including the game-winning basket.
Austin, which fell to 12-3, was led by Jones’ 31 points. Stanley Umude added 34 points and Micah Potter recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
The game was part of the NBA G League’s showcase event at the Orange County Convention Center. Stockton next hosts Rip City on Dec. 27, while Austin will host Mexico City the same night.
