Windy City vs. Birmingham
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Interstat) — In a G League thriller defined by a breathtaking individual duel and a frantic final minute, the Birmingham Squadron edged the Windy City Bulls 134-133 on Tuesday night at Legacy Arena.
The game’s defining sequence unfolded in the closing seconds, a chaotic exchange of free throws and defensive stands that ultimately favored the home team. With the score tied at 133 and nine seconds remaining, Windy City’s Mac McClung was called for a shooting foul on Birmingham’s Trey Alexander. Alexander, who finished with 29 points and 12 assists, calmly sank all three free throws to put the Squadron ahead by one.
After a Windy City timeout, Birmingham’s Johnny O’Neil fouled McClung with six seconds left. McClung missed the first free throw but made the second to again tie the game. Following another Birmingham timeout, Windy City’s Keyshawn Bryant fouled Alexander with four seconds on the clock. Alexander again delivered, hitting both shots to restore the Squadron’s one-point lead.
Windy City had one final chance, but Alexander capped his stellar two-way performance by blocking McClung’s desperation three-point attempt at the buzzer to secure the victory.
The dramatic finish capped a remarkable comeback by the Bulls, who trailed by as many as 15 points in the second quarter. Windy City exploded for 43 points in the fourth quarter, spearheaded by McClung’s heroic efforts. The point guard scored a game-high 59 points, adding 10 assists and five rebounds in nearly 43 minutes of action. His performance continued a torrid scoring stretch, marking his third 40-point game in his last five outings.
Birmingham’s victory was a product of balanced and efficient offense, with five players scoring at least 18 points. Hunter Dickinson, the 7-foot-1 center from Alexandria, Virginia, dominated the interior with 24 points and 16 rebounds. Christian Shumate added 27 points and 11 rebounds, while O’Neil posted an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double. Josh Oduro contributed 22 points.
The Squadron used a massive 39-point second quarter to build a 64-60 halftime lead after trailing by seven following the first period. They maintained a slim 95-90 advantage heading into the final quarter, setting the stage for the high-scoring, back-and-forth finish where the teams combined for 82 points.
With the win, Birmingham improved its season record to 21-28, while Windy City fell to 22-27. The Squadron avenged a loss from just three days prior, having defeated the Bulls by an identical one-point margin on Sunday.
Birmingham next travels to face Grand Rapids on Friday. Windy City continues its road trip at Westchester on Saturday.
