Santa Cruz vs. Stockton
STOCKTON, Calif. (Interstat) — The Stockton Kings used a dominant second-half offensive explosion to pull away from the Santa Cruz Warriors, securing a 121-103 victory in a G League matchup Sunday at Stockton Arena.
The game, which saw the Kings improve to 30-16 and the Warriors fall to 15-32, was effectively decided in a blistering third quarter. After leading 49-44 at halftime, Stockton outscored Santa Cruz 37-27 in the period, turning a competitive contest into a comfortable double-digit lead they would not relinquish.
The most important stretch of the game began early in the third quarter. With Stockton leading 55-50, the Kings unleashed a decisive 17-4 run over a four-minute span. The surge was fueled by a combination of stifling defense and efficient scoring. K.J. Jones and DaQuan Jeffries hit key jumpers, Jon Elmore orchestrated the offense with multiple assists, and the Kings capitalized on consecutive Santa Cruz turnovers, converting them into fast-break opportunities including a running dunk by Jeffries. That sequence expanded the lead to 72-54 and forced a Santa Cruz timeout, effectively breaking the game open.
Santa Cruz, which had kept pace in the first half by scoring 28 points in the second quarter, could not match Stockton’s firepower after the break. The Warriors’ offense, while finding moments of rhythm, was inconsistent against a balanced Kings attack. Every time Santa Cruz strung together a few baskets, Stockton answered promptly, often with a 3-pointer to stifle any building momentum.
The Kings’ depth was on full display, particularly in the second half. Jeffries was a constant offensive catalyst, attacking the rim and hitting from outside throughout the game. Jones provided a critical spark off the bench with timely three-point shooting, while veteran guard Jameer Nelson steadied the offense and hit big shots. Mitch Mascari of Geneva, Illinois, also contributed key perimeter baskets during Stockton’s pivotal runs.
For Santa Cruz, Chance McMillian and Marques Bolden provided offensive production, but the team struggled to get consistent stops. The Warriors shot just 16 points in the opening quarter and, despite their second-quarter push, could not sustain the defensive intensity needed to contain the Kings’ multifaceted attack.
Stockton sealed the win in the fourth quarter by maintaining its offensive pressure, scoring 35 points and matching Santa Cruz basket-for-basket down the stretch. The Kings’ ball movement was sharp, with Elmore and others consistently finding open teammates, culminating in several highlight plays including an alley-oop dunk to Nelson in the final minutes.
The victory continued Stockton’s recent success, having now won two straight, while Santa Cruz saw a brief one-game winning streak snapped following its victory over Rio Grande Valley on Saturday. The Kings’ season record against the Warriors improved to 3-0, having won all head-to-head matchups this season.
According to Interstat’s ELO system, Stockton was projected with an 83.7 percent probability to win, a forecast borne out by their commanding second-half performance. The Kings next travel to face the South Bay Lakers on Tuesday, while the Warriors head to Salt Lake City to take on the Stars the same night.
