Birmingham vs. Stockton

STOCKTON, Calif. (Interstat) — The Birmingham Squadron, fueled by a dominant first half and a resilient overtime performance, snapped a three-game losing streak with a 127-119 victory over the Stockton Kings in a G League contest Sunday at Stockton Arena.

In a game that saw 18 lead changes and 13 ties, the Squadron overcame a late rally by the Kings, who erased a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit to force overtime. Birmingham then seized control in the extra period, scoring the first eight points to secure the win.

The game turned decisively in the opening minutes of overtime. After winning the tip, Birmingham’s Johnny O’Neil sank a 3-pointer off an assist from D.J. Carton. Following a defensive stop, Trey Alexander hit a pull-up jumper. Carton then capped the 8-0 burst with another 3-pointer, assisted by Alexander, giving Birmingham a commanding 125-117 lead just 90 seconds into the extra frame. Stockton never recovered.

Birmingham set the tone early with an explosive offensive display, scoring 72 points in the first half. The Squadron shot efficiently from the perimeter and capitalized on fast-break opportunities, building a lead that reached 12 points in the second quarter. Stockton, however, chipped away throughout the second half, leveraging its physicality inside and timely shooting.

The Kings’ comeback was nearly completed in the final seconds of regulation. Trailing by two, Stockton’s Mitch Mascari hit a 3-pointer with 26 seconds left to give the Kings a 117-116 lead. Birmingham’s Trey Alexander was fouled and made one of two free throws to tie the game with 10 seconds remaining. Stockton had the final possession, but Jameer Nelson’s step-back jumper missed, and K.J. Jones’ put-back attempt at the buzzer also failed, sending the game to overtime tied at 117.

Birmingham’s backcourt duo of Carton and Alexander provided consistent scoring and playmaking throughout the contest. Hunter Dickinson, the 7-foot-1 center from Alexandria, Virginia, anchored the interior for the Squadron with a strong two-way performance, contributing key rebounds and baskets.

For Stockton, the backcourt combination of Nelson and Jon Elmore kept the Kings in the game with persistent drives and outside shooting. Mascari provided a critical spark off the bench with several clutch 3-pointers during the comeback effort.

The victory improved Birmingham’s season record to 16 wins and 28 losses. Stockton, which had defeated the Squadron by 25 points just three days prior, fell to 26-14. The Kings had been projected as heavy favorites to win the game by statistical models.

Birmingham next travels to face the Grand Rapids Gold on Wednesday. Stockton begins a four-game road trip at Sioux Falls on Wednesday.
