Rio Grande Valley vs. Raptors 905
MISSISSAUGA, Ontario (Interstat) — In a high-octane G League showdown between two of the league’s top teams, the Raptors 905 used a dominant third quarter to overcome a halftime deficit and hold off the Rio Grande Valley Vipers for a 128-120 victory at Hershey Centre on Friday night.
The win improved the Raptors’ record to 31-12, solidifying their standing near the top of the league, while the Vipers fell to 24-16.
The game’s pivotal shift came immediately after halftime. Trailing 65-58 at the break, the Raptors erupted for 37 points in the third quarter while clamping down defensively to limit Rio Grande Valley to 25. A key 13-2 run midway through the period, fueled by three-pointers from Tyreke Key and Caleb Stone-Carrawell and orchestrated by point guard A.J. Hoggard, turned a narrow deficit into a commanding 95-90 lead heading into the final frame.
Raptors 905 center Trayce Jackson-Davis was the engine of the comeback and the game’s most dominant force. The 6-foot-9 big man recorded a double-double with 32 points and 11 rebounds, adding four assists and two blocks. His relentless work on the offensive glass and efficiency around the rim proved too much for the Vipers’ interior defense to handle consistently.
Rio Grande Valley was led by a stellar performance from small forward Tristen Newton, who scored 29 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Point guard Daishen Nix added a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while center Efe Abogidi provided 17 points and seven rebounds off the bench.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair defined by offensive runs. The Vipers, leveraging Newton’s scoring and the playmaking of Cameron Matthews, built a 37-point second quarter to take their seven-point lead into the locker room. Matthews finished with 19 points and six assists.
However, the Raptors’ depth and adjustment at halftime made the difference. Hoggard, a native of Coatesville, Pennsylvania, controlled the tempo in the second half, finishing with 16 points and nine assists. Key contributed 23 points, and Stone-Carrawell provided crucial scoring off the bench during the decisive third-quarter surge.
The Raptors also received efficient production from Tyrese Samuel, who scored 13 points in just 14 minutes, and Jarkel Joiner, who managed 11 points and six assists.
Despite the loss, the Vipers showcased their offensive firepower, with center Chase Jeter scoring 18 points in 20 minutes. The game was a rematch of a Wednesday contest won by Rio Grande Valley 123-121, making Friday’s result a swift revenge for the Raptors on their home floor.
The victory was achieved against the odds, as pregame analytics gave Raptors 905 a 57.4% probability to win, a forecast they narrowly exceeded in the tightly contested matchup.
Both teams return to action on Sunday. Rio Grande Valley travels to face the Windy City Bulls, while Raptors 905 hosts the Delaware Blue Coats.
