South Bay vs. Valley

TEMPE, Ariz. (Interstat) — The South Bay Lakers turned a high-octane second quarter into a decisive rout, defeating the Valley Suns 129-98 in a G League game Thursday night at Mullett Arena.

The most important part of the game unfolded in the second period, where South Bay transformed a competitive contest into a lopsided affair. After trailing 70-65 late in the first half, the Lakers closed the second quarter on a staggering 31-4 run over the final 5 minutes and 57 seconds. This surge flipped a five-point deficit into a commanding 96-74 halftime lead from which Valley never recovered. The Suns managed only 15 points in the third quarter as South Bay extended its advantage, effectively ending the game as a contest long before the final buzzer.

Nick Smith, a shooting guard from Jacksonville, Arkansas, led all scorers with 30 points for South Bay, adding six rebounds and four assists in 30 minutes. Drew Timme, the team’s top star, provided a highly efficient 25 points and eight rebounds in just 24 minutes of action. Luke Goode of Fort Wayne, Indiana, just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds, while also contributing four assists.

For the Valley Suns, center C.J. Huntley of Huntersville, North Carolina, scored 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Koby Brea of Washington Heights, New York, added 18 points, and Sean McDermott finished with 14 points and six rebounds.

The Lakers dominated key statistical categories, showcasing the defensive intensity that fueled their game-breaking run. They forced 22 Valley turnovers, converting them into numerous transition opportunities, and recorded 15 steals compared to just seven for the Suns. South Bay also dished out 15 assists, more than doubling Valley’s total of seven. Offensively, the Lakers were precise, shooting 55.1% from the field and a perfect 12 for 12 from the free-throw line.

The victory improved South Bay’s season record to 22 wins and 15 losses across all competitions, solidifying its position as a playoff contender. The loss dropped Valley to 11-27 on the season. The teams had played the previous night, with South Bay securing a 113-99 victory on Wednesday.

South Bay next hosts the Stockton Kings on Saturday. Valley travels to face the Texas Legends on the same night.
