Motor City vs. Austin
AUSTIN, Texas (Interstat) — The Austin Spurs used a dominant first half and weathered a furious second-half rally from the Motor City Cruise to secure a 102-94 victory in a G League matchup on Thursday afternoon at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park.
The Spurs, improving their record to 27-11, built a commanding 46-33 lead by halftime, capitalizing on a sluggish start from the visiting Cruise. Austin’s defense set the tone early, forcing turnovers and converting them into easy baskets to establish a double-digit cushion. Donovan Williams led the balanced Spurs attack, consistently finding ways to the basket and drawing fouls.
Motor City, which fell to 19-20, came out of the locker room with renewed energy after the break. The Cruise exploded for 30 points in the third quarter, spearheaded by a sharp-shooting display from Chaz Lanier and Bobi Klintman. The duo connected on multiple three-pointers during the period, fueling a run that saw Motor City trim a sizable deficit down to a single possession multiple times.
The most critical sequence of the game occurred late in the fourth quarter as the Cruise threatened to complete the comeback. After cutting the Austin lead to just four points with under three minutes to play, Motor City had several opportunities to draw closer. However, the Spurs’ defense tightened, forcing key stops and turnovers on consecutive possessions. A crucial block by John Ukomadu on a driving attempt by Williams with just over a minute left preserved a six-point Austin advantage and effectively halted Motor City’s momentum.
Following the defensive stand, the Spurs sealed the game at the free-throw line. Austin was efficient in the closing minute, with Adam Flagler and Trey McGowens combining to make four consecutive free throws to extend the lead back to eight and put the game out of reach.
Williams was instrumental for Austin, providing scoring and playmaking throughout the contest. The Spurs also received significant interior contributions from their centers, with Osayi Osifo and James Banks providing defense and rebounding. For Motor City, Makhi Mitchell was a force defensively with multiple blocks, while Lanier’s perimeter shooting sparked the second-half surge.
The win keeps Austin near the top of the Western Conference standings, while Motor City continues to search for consistency as it hovers around the .500 mark. Both teams return to action on Sunday, with the Spurs hosting Memphis and the Cruise traveling to face Oklahoma City.
