Wisconsin vs. Delaware
WILMINGTON, Del. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dominant opening act and a frantic, nail-biting finish, the Delaware Blue Coats held off a furious second-half rally from the Wisconsin Herd to secure a 99-94 victory in a G League contest Saturday night at 76ers Fieldhouse.
The most critical phase of the game was unquestionably the first quarter, where Delaware built a commanding lead that ultimately proved insurmountable. The Blue Coats exploded for 38 points in the period, fueled by a blistering start from DeAndre Williams and Kennedy Chandler. The duo combined for 24 points in the quarter, overwhelming a Wisconsin team that managed just 22 points. Delaware’s efficiency and control were stark, as they assisted on six of their 13 made field goals while committing only two turnovers. In contrast, Wisconsin struggled from the opening tip, shooting 1 for 11 from three-point range in the quarter and allowing Delaware to establish a 16-point lead that set the tone for the entire contest.
Despite the early deficit, Wisconsin refused to capitulate. The Herd chipped away at the lead throughout the second and third quarters, leveraging a disruptive defense that generated 11 steals and 15 Delaware turnovers. A 27-point third quarter for Wisconsin, highlighted by back-to-back three-pointers from Victor Oladipo and Mark Sears, cut the deficit to single digits and set the stage for a tense final period.
The game’s climax came in the last two minutes. After a Kira Lewis layup brought Wisconsin within two points at 93-91, Delaware’s Saint Thomas responded with a crucial 27-foot three-pointer. Drew Cisse followed with a putback on the next possession to extend the lead to 95-91. Wisconsin’s Johnny Davis answered with a tip-in with 22 seconds remaining to make it 97-94, but critical free throws from Kennedy Chandler with 10 seconds left pushed the lead back to five. A last-second three-pointer from Lewis as time expired accounted for the final margin.
DeAndre Williams led all players with 32 points, 12 rebounds and five assists for Delaware, solidifying his status as the game’s top performer. Kennedy Chandler added 25 points, while Saint Thomas filled the stat sheet with 17 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. For Wisconsin, Mark Sears scored 20 points and Victor Oladipo contributed 16 points, five rebounds and six assists. Kira Lewis provided 16 points off the bench.
The victory improved Delaware’s record to 14-18 across all competitions, while Wisconsin fell to 11-22. The Blue Coats have now won two straight against the Herd after a 105-103 victory last Thursday.
Statistically, Delaware’s early work on the glass was decisive. They outrebounded Wisconsin 60-46, including a 20-12 advantage in offensive rebounds leading to 21 second-chance points. While both teams shot under 38% from the field, Delaware’s 11-of-16 performance from the free throw line narrowly edged Wisconsin’s perfect 10-of-10 night. The Herd’s 9-of-41 shooting from three-point range, a 22% clip, hampered their comeback efforts throughout the night.
Delaware next hosts Long Island on Thursday, Feb. 12. Wisconsin returns home to face Birmingham on Monday, Feb. 9.
