Maine vs. Sioux Falls
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Interstat) — Amari Williams converted a driving layup with 1.3 seconds remaining in overtime Wednesday night to lift the Maine Celtics to a 117-116 victory over the Sioux Falls Skyforce in a G League thriller at Sanford Pentagon.
The game-winning basket capped a chaotic final sequence and secured a dramatic road win for Maine, which improved to 20-13. Sioux Falls fell to 18-15.
The decisive play was set up by a critical turnover. With the score tied at 116, Sioux Falls’ Alex Fudge was called for an offensive goaltending violation on a putback attempt with 1.3 seconds left in the extra period, giving Maine possession under its own basket. On the ensuing inbounds play, Williams received the pass, drove across the lane and finished with his right hand to put the Celtics ahead.
Sioux Falls’ desperation heave at the buzzer was unsuccessful.
The frantic finish was characteristic of a game that featured 19 lead changes and 13 ties. Neither team led by more than seven points. Maine’s victory was secured despite being outrebounded 58-43 and shooting just 41.6% from the field. The Celtics compensated by forcing 24 Sioux Falls turnovers, committing only 14 themselves, and recording 12 steals.
Williams, a center from Nottingham, England, was the catalyst for Maine, delivering a dominant all-around performance with 26 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists in 39 minutes. His assist total was part of a 12-assist night for the Celtics, doubling the Skyforce’s output of six.
Maine point guard Hayden Gray of Solana Beach, California, played all 45 minutes, contributing 23 points and 10 assists. Jalen Bridges added 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Tosan Evbuomwan scored 19 points and Hason Ward had 17.
Sioux Falls was led by Steve Settle’s 24 points. Cam Carter scored 23 points, all after the first quarter, and Trevor Keels added 21 points and five assists. Dain Dainja, the Skyforce center from Chicago, posted 18 points, nine rebounds and four blocks.
The game required overtime after a tightly contested fourth quarter. Maine had built a 110-107 lead after two free throws from Evbuomwan with one second remaining in regulation. Following a timeout, Sioux Falls executed a sideline play that resulted in a corner 3-pointer from Gabe Madsen at the buzzer, tying the game at 110 and forcing the extra session.
In overtime, the teams traded baskets before two free throws by Keels gave Sioux Falls a 116-114 lead with 1:33 left. Evbuomwan made one of two free throws on the next possession to cut the deficit to one. After a Sioux Falls shot clock violation, Gray missed a floating jumper that would have given Maine the lead, setting the stage for the final, turnover-marred sequence and Williams’ game-winner.
Maine scored 26, 25, 27 and 32 points across the four quarters before adding seven in overtime. Sioux Falls had 27, 28, 24 and 31 in regulation before managing six in the extra period.
The Celtics continue their road trip with a rematch against the Skyforce here on Friday. Sioux Falls hosts that game before embarking on a two-game trip to Oklahoma City.
