Rip City vs. Mexico City
MEXICO CITY (Interstat) — In a high-octane G League shootout Tuesday night, the Rip City Remix avenged a blowout loss from just two days prior, outlasting the Mexico City Capitanes 130-119 at Estadio Azteca.
The most critical phase of the game was its explosive start. The Remix, playing as the visiting team, came out with palpable energy, building a commanding 38-16 lead after the first quarter. This early dominance, fueled by a 22-point advantage, provided a cushion that the Capitanes spent the rest of the evening trying to overcome. Mexico City mounted several challenges, including a 37-point second quarter, but could never fully erase the deficit created in the opening period.
Rip City guard Sean Pedulla, coming off a 25-point performance in Sunday’s loss to the same opponent, was the catalyst. He finished with 35 points and 10 assists, orchestrating the Remix offense efficiently. His backcourt partner, Blake Hinson, added 27 points and five assists, while center Alex Reese recorded a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds.
Mexico City, which had routed Rip City 130-104 on Sunday, was led by Boo Buie’s 20 points and seven assists. James Bouknight scored 21 points off the bench, and Felipe Haase provided a spark with 16 points in just 16 minutes. The Capitanes shot a efficient 47.5 percent from the field and 87.5 percent from the free-throw line but were ultimately undone by 14 turnovers and a significant rebounding deficit, losing the battle on the glass 48-38.
The game was a display of offensive firepower, with both teams posting elite offensive ratings. Rip City scored 130 points on 102 possessions for a rating of 127.8, while Mexico City managed 119 points on 95 possessions for a 125.2 rating. The Remix attempted 31 more shots than the Capitanes, a product of their 15 offensive rebounds and ability to force turnovers.
Despite the loss, Mexico City’s comeback attempts kept the game competitive. They trimmed the lead to single digits at multiple points in the second half, but timely baskets from Pedulla and Reese consistently stemmed the tide for Rip City. The Remix sealed the victory by making 10 of 12 free throws in the final 1:29 of the game.
With the win, Rip City improved its season record to 19-14, moving a half-game ahead of Mexico City, which fell to 18-14. The victory was a significant bounce-back for the Remix, who were projected by Interstat’s ELO system to have only a 31 percent chance of winning on the road.
Rip City continues its road trip with a pair of games at College Park on Feb. 7 and 9. Mexico City heads west for a two-game set at Stockton on Feb. 11 and 12.
