Salt Lake City vs. South Bay
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (Interstat) — The South Bay Lakers delivered an offensive clinic, overwhelming the Salt Lake City Stars 146-104 in a G League matchup Saturday night at the UCLA Health Training Center.
The game was decided in a devastating first quarter, where the Lakers set an immediate and insurmountable tone. South Bay erupted for 42 points while holding Salt Lake City to 24, shooting a blistering 68% from the field in the period. The Lakers’ lead never dipped below double digits after the opening minutes, effectively putting the contest out of reach before the end of the first frame.
South Bay guard R.J. Davis, coming off a triple-double two nights prior against the same opponent, spearheaded the onslaught with a game-high 45 points. He added eight assists and five rebounds, orchestrating an attack that finished with a staggering offensive rating of 144.2. The Lakers shot 62.6% from the field overall and 51.5% from three-point range.
The Lakers’ interior defense, anchored by center Kylor Kelley, was equally dominant. Kelley recorded a triple-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, but his most impactful contribution was a game-altering six blocked shots. His presence at the rim repeatedly stifled Salt Lake City’s drives, contributing to the Stars’ 37-of-95 shooting performance.
Salt Lake City, which fell to 19-13, never found an offensive rhythm. Despite securing 16 offensive rebounds, the Stars managed only five total assists against 14 turnovers, highlighting a stagnant attack. Dereon Seabron led the Stars with 18 points and six assists, while Matthew Cleveland added 17 points and eight rebounds.
South Bay’s ball movement and shot-making were superior throughout. The Lakers dished out 38 assists on 57 made field goals, with Kobe Bufkin contributing 23 points and eight assists. The Lakers also converted 17 three-pointers compared to Salt Lake City’s seven.
The win improved South Bay’s record to 16-13, marking their second victory over the Stars in three days following a 125-118 result on Thursday. The most important sequence of the game was the initial 12 minutes, where the Lakers’ combination of efficient scoring and disruptive defense built a lead that Salt Lake City showed no capacity to challenge.
Both teams return to action Monday. South Bay begins a road trip at Osceola, while Salt Lake City returns home to host San Diego.
