Iowa vs. Santa Cruz
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (Interstat) — The Santa Cruz Warriors used a dominant second quarter and held off a late rally to defeat the Iowa Wolves 108-101 in a G League matchup Friday night at Kaiser Permanente Arena.
The Warriors, improving to 10-19, seized control of the game with a 34-point outburst in the second period, turning a narrow 28-25 lead after one quarter into a 62-48 halftime advantage. That surge proved to be the decisive stretch, as the Wolves spent the rest of the night chipping away but could never fully recover.
Iowa, which fell to 18-13, mounted a significant challenge in the final minutes. Trailing 102-96 with under four minutes to play, the Wolves used an 8-2 run, capped by a Nate Santos 3-pointer and a Rocco Zikarsky tip-in, to close the gap to 104-101 with 2:50 remaining. The Wolves had several opportunities to draw closer but were plagued by missed shots and turnovers down the stretch.
Santa Cruz secured the victory at the free-throw line in the final 12 seconds, with Malevy Leons sinking two clutch foul shots to extend the lead to seven. Iowa’s final attempt, a 3-pointer from Jules Bernard as time expired, was off the mark.
The Warriors’ offense was fueled by balanced scoring and effective ball movement, particularly during their pivotal second-quarter run where they built their largest lead. Iowa, meanwhile, struggled to find consistent rhythm from beyond the arc throughout the contest, a key factor in their inability to overtake the Warriors despite winning both the third and fourth quarters.
Alize Johnson led the Wolves with a versatile performance, contributing across multiple categories. For Santa Cruz, Jacksen Moni provided a critical interior presence and Jack Clark was instrumental on both ends of the floor.
The game was a back-and-forth affair early, with six lead changes in the first quarter before Santa Cruz began to pull away. The Warriors’ ability to convert Iowa’s turnovers into easy baskets in the second period was a major catalyst for their commanding halftime lead.
Iowa’s record on the road now stands at 8-7, while Santa Cruz improved its home record to 7-9. The two teams are scheduled for a quick rematch at the same venue Saturday night.
According to Interstat’s ELO system, Santa Cruz entered the game with a 52.4% probability of victory. The Warriors’ performance, particularly in the decisive second quarter, validated that slight favoritism against a Wolves team that had won three of its last four games.
